The SDD is pretty out of your price range.

I personally think the Nova Repeater is great. Lots of tonal options, tap tempo, modulated delay, reverse delay, note division, spillover (incredibly cool and useful) etc. etc. AND relatively cheap (in your price range) Definitely worth looking at.

I'd go with the nova repeater if you want something that's really easy to play with other people with. Where it doesn't even self oscillate it wouldn't really get very weird, even reverse delay isn't all that wierd to me :idk:

I'd go with either the deluxe memory boy or the malekko 616. The deluxe memory boy has the tap tempo, crazy modulation and an effects loop but is really dark overall. The 616 is pretty bright and has all kinds of crazy modulation, and is just a nice simple delay. For simple delay sounds and crazy delay sounds both these are really good options.

If you go with the 616, order it directly from malekko.

Most people here like the same 2 or 3 pedals--they're excellent, but there are other options.

This isn't as sexy as the others mentioned, but it has a lot of bang for the buck--long delay, reverse, modulate, analog modeling, stereo in and/or out, tap tempo, expression pedal ($165--can often find them cheaper on ebay):

This is very sexy and gives some very cool, strange, and unique effects with the photo eye, though it's a bit limited (Moody Sounds Mushroom Echo--$180--can occasionally find cheaper on ebay) :

I was a long time boss delay user... Works great, once I joined ilf I really decided I wanted to support the builders on this forum. That's why my choice is the sdd, but hell I still have an ibanez de7 on my board that never gets turned off so what do I know:)

Another option that hasn't been mentioned is the Line 6 Echo Park. Has really good sounds and instantly accessible tap tempo in a boss size enclosure. Also guitar center has been blowing them out for $120 and you can usually find them used for $100. If you go for the echo park try to get the newer lighter weighting one with the internal dip switches which turn on or off a slight volume boost when the pedal is engaged.

I'd avoid the Malekko 616 and just save up waiting for the 919 to become available, you're halfway there already. Analog, tap-tempo, modulation, tone control to go from bright to dark, and claims of some pretty insane synth and lo-fi tones. Should be a huge range of sounds, from standard to crazy, all in a pretty small pedal, smaller than two 616s side by side. That's my next delay without a doubt. I was recently told it should be out in the next few months, fingers crossed.

As stated, the SDD is also super cool, digital, but mine sounds incredibly analog and oscillates with ease. Also takes other pedals well, especially distortion and fuzz.

There are some decent options for $150, but I've sold every delay I bought in that price range, should've spent a little more to start with.

StudioShutIn wrote:I hesitate to recommend the Memory Boy, though..I have one and I don't particularly like it. It's VERY dark and murky, and a little on the noisey side.
Also, the LFO for the modulation 'ticks' or 'pulses' slightly, even when the pedal is disengaged. (no true bypass, methinks)

Totally agree, the Memory Boy is less than decent. Good ideas and features, sounded all hissy and overly dark, worse than a Carbon Copy. That LFO ticking is a common problem with EHX, true bypass pedals included. My nano Small Stone did it terribly in bypass only. After returning it 3 times, I found one that doesn't tick, quality control is shit there.

I will vote for an SDD. it has killed any delay GAS I have had. (still getting a DM4 just for fuckery and shits an giggles)

For a 150 exactly the MXR carbon copy is the best budget delay out there. I loved mine, and for how simple it is, you can dial in a huge amount of sounds for it.

But the Sunny Day Delay is that good.

Something to consider saving for.

the line 6 echo is really cool too. but whoever said the nova repeater was fugly, take a look at this sex machine.

now i'm pretty conflicted. lol. there are a lot of good options. i was actually looking at the SDD and i really liked the demos, but it is quite out of my price range. i guess i could sell whatever i decide to buy now towards the sdd if i want to in the future

Another advantage of the echo park is you can get into red panda line 6 tone core modules if your into that.

That thing is beyond fugly, I could never get over the look of those pedals, hear it sounds pretty good though.

This here though is pure sex, in pedal form. The LED in the treasure chest is a color changer too, I love Dr. Scientist!

i havent tried the deluxe memory boy but i only had a regular memory boy for about a week. the pitch modulation sounded awesome the first time you used it but i could barely get a non insane delay sound out of it. but i say try it

25% off on your birthday, getting ready to change it over to the screen print pedals only I think, I'd get the SDD for the discount while you still can, substantial savings.
