Reverb, tremelo. I also run my signal through a potato. Just shove the 1/8"s right in there. It powers itself.

Ring-mod:
weird? check
non-fuzz? check
non-modulation? check
I use treble boosters a lot though -- rangemasters / JHS types -- which are also non-fuzz, non-mod but not very weird.

ring-modulation is non-modulation?
One thing that's missing from most guitar filters is resonance control. I might suggest picking up something like the Electrix Filter Factory. Tweak one of the 4 filter types, and crank the resonance on it, and you'll get some interesting textures not often heard on guitar.
I'll also second the ebow in harmonic mode. Not many devices will enhance harmonics to that degree without distorting the tone as well.
Digital delays can be quite textural at very high speeds.
Also, feedback loops are a fun option. They don't always have to be extreme. Sometimes a little subtlety can make a dull tone very interesting.

Filters. In post some omnisphere and alchemy patches that are sorta impossible to pull off live; unless a computer gets used.

Moog MuRF!
That new Copilot stepped filter thing!
And I love using the manual setting on my old Ross Flanger with no sweeping for awesome, gritty, metallic, static comb filtering.

I've been hoping to find something that does this...but so far all I've found are the MXR flanger (not sure about the build quality) and the GNI flanger (expensive) and I'm not sure I wanna shell out money for vintage stuff either...

ring-modulation is non-modulation?![]()
+1 I was wondering: What defines a modulation FX pedal?
By a literal definition, aren't all effects modulating? That seems too simple though. Educate me ILF!!!

Re: Weird non fuzz, non modulation FX
I too require a definition of modulation. From my understanding anything that purposefully alters the signal is modulating the signal. This discussion of non-modulation confuses me.

Re: Weird non fuzz, non modulation FX
Modulation is when you alter a carrier signal with a modulating signal. You need two sources. FM/Vibrato, AM/Tremolo, and Ring-Modulation are most common in guitar pedals. Be aware that a phaser does not use phase-modulation. They're two different things. Phasers and flangers can be modulated by an LFO, but are not modulation effects in and of themselves. They are filter effects. Modulating signals are usually LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators), but you can use any waveform as a modulating signal, like another instrument or a high-frequency (audible pitch) oscillator as well.
This explains it better than I do. Check the "Passband modulation techniques" box on the side for some weirder ones.

I snagged my Ross for around $125. They're out there. It has internal trimpots to really dial in the tone too. And built like a tank!
