I know he owns the Bit Mangler, which I'm looking into. The Metasonix stuff is appealing but people seem to charge ass raping prices for it second hand, which sucks. Didn't know about the DBA stuff. I'll be looking into that because it's more realistic for the price. Already owned a Geiger Counter Civilian and hated the fucking thing. It's crazy sounding, but made me feel like I was getting a migraine.
I am interested in the snyth side of things and dream of one day owning a full set up with rack mounts and computers and so many effects that I won't know what to do with them.

But for now, I'm going to try some different pedals. Not really trying to emulate everything Reznor does, I just really dig his bass riffs. Also a HUGE fan of Ministry which has similar sound. That industrial tone is what I want hard. HARD. I'd really, really like to know what pedals he's using in the video I posted, but don't know how to find out.
I was trying some settings out on my Fuzzhugger last night. With the voltage turned way down, the gain turned way up, and the fuzz about a 1/3 of the way to all the way up, I achieved pretty damn close to the sound I'm looking for. It was a very static type of broken fuzz. Loved it.

I had the pleasure of spending some time with William from WMD, and his Geiger Counter. I know TREZ uses one of these, probably not in that reptile video, but just from a little time playing, I can tell you it will get you TONS of NIN tones. It seems bit crushing is at the core of modern TR processing.

So is the normal Geiger Counter different than the Civilian? Like I said, the Civilian gave me a headache...but now I'm regretting getting rid of it. GOD! Why do I flip effects soooo much???????? WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!
Also I've been looking into the Synth Mangler and Loop Mangler. Dwarfcraft might be the way to go for what I'm trying to achieve.

You can see at 3:07 his pedals on the floor... Looks like something black with big knobs and a... DS-1...

I'm sure it's something else but it's orange... I was mentioning modular stuff cause you can get it cheap... A rack is maybe $150. and the panels can be as low as $60 or so... I see a lot on Doepfers site that could do that stuff for about $90... Just saying it's an option and you can run any kind of audio into them... It's just for synths... The Metesonix stuff is like half guitar and half synth effects... Also about Mountain King, I meant to say Magnetar, check that out for crazy bass... And the B:Assmaster was made with Paul Barker and Josh when they both lived in Austin, that's pretty Ministry...

The only reason I steered away from rack mount is I have no idea how to set one up. I really don't even know what type of stuff I need. Do you have any specific suggestions in that area?
Checking out the other things you've suggested as well.
Thanks for all the info!

jwar wrote:I watched a demo of that Oto today as well. It sounds fucking amazing! But you're right on the 600. Ouch. It's not that I wouldn't be willing to pay that much, but I'd have to save for awhile. Looks like the Alesis Bitrman is discontinued. So that's going be hard to find. Hmmm...I don't know much about Modular Synths. I'll have to google that and see what I come up with.
I have a Bitrman. It's pretty awesome. Actually, it's really awesome but I never use it. I just saw it in a thrift shop in Jersey and had way too much money in my pocket that day to pass up anything that said "bitcrush" on it. I didn't know what it was at all. Problem was that it didn't include the adapter and I had to hunt one down. I ended up buying the Alesis FAZE on ebay just to get the power adapter.
I know this isn't B/S/T but it's on topic. Hit me up if you're interested. I'm still trying to thin the herd. As cool as the MODfx are people are asking WAY TOO MUCH for the things on ebay.

you can't go wrong with the devi ever bit or dwarfcraft bit mangler. I'm also a fan of the ehx micro synthesizer. it's not as great for tracking chords/multiple notes at once and there's a definite learning curve with it, but its quite versatile

So do we think this bass tone is maybe a Depth Charge?

Yes I had it confirmed by Justin Meldal Johnsen.

The only thing I know about Trent Reznor is that he had a modded Seppuku Analsynth.
It just sold, along with all the other pedals in this picture. In under 24 hours. From Finland. They were €50 a piece. lol. I has a sad.

Goddamnit I necro-bumped this thread cuz I was inspired by Trent Reznor's bass tone and now I'm depressed.

massively dude. The GC regular has 256 wave tables and a tone control and separate bit crushing and sample rate reduction, each or both controllable via expression pedal.
And phuck metasonix. anyone who designs an amp (the fucking fucker) that specifically says it will catch on fire if you leave it on (and I know someone who's FF went into meltdown), is beyond hope.
GC > metasonix. Much more useful.
