i did a search and the serial #'s might be in this thread? its 19 pages so i didnt search the whole thing..

or maybe shoot a msg to akai?

Just sent a message asking that question to AKAI product support. Hopefully they will answer. Would be great to get an MPC1000 cheap ($450 or less) , not have to upgrade the pads, put a big hard drive and 128 mgs of sampler memory in it (From my calcuations should be less than $150) and then be working with a portable super-powerful sampling, recording workstation for $600 or maybe even a bit less and then add JJ OS....what is the difference between pay and free versions?

JJOS comparison chart
http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~mpc1000/chart.htm

I have OS2 on mine, havent used any other versions, but I don't think the difference between OS2 and OS2XL are that big.

the difference between free and OS1 and OS2 are pretty substantial tho i would say, but like always personal preference rules.
mine had OS2 already on it, but if u are going to upgrade from scratch (and are going to pay) it makes sense to just go all the way up, u can always try the free one out and see if that suits all your needs first.

u also have to buy each OS to jump up to the next one, but I think they give u a deal to jump from nothing to like OS2 or OS2XL.

all in all its def worth the skrilla :thumb:

yea $600 for all the mpc1000+JJOS can do is a fuckin steal....from what i remember if u buy third part ram (ie. NOT AKAI, which is grossly overpriced) its like 10-15 dollars, and u should be able to find a suitable HD for like $30-50 plus the HD mounting kit (cant remember how much that is) or u can always go the CF card route and dont forget the USB to drag and drop to/from your computer

I am also pondering the MPC 2500 as I have been seeing them used with no upgrades for $699.....the upside seems to be bigger, better pads, general solidity and build quality, more audio outs, more midi ins and outs....the downside is bigger, less portable, appears to have pretty much the same functionality with JJ OS as the 1000.....with the Akai operating system less functionality than the 1000 with JJ OS....

A 2500 looks kind of appealing, though.

I've also seen the MPC 5000 used at $1099 in one case.....and of course that already has a hard drive (only 80 gb, though) but they still don't max out the sample ram...they only give you 64mb....with the option of going up to 192 mb.....and of course it has 8 track recording....and has a synth...also much bigger and heavier. If I am understanding the JJ OS allows for some kind of recording of tracks....but I think it is implemented differently than what the 5000 can do - - - can anyone confirm?

I think I am now on the trail of the 5000. Just need to find one at a decent price.

I've seen them as cheap as $1099 used on the GuitarCenter used site.....as low as $1499 new but I am not sure that was an actual dealer.

Has 8 track hard disk recording, effects, and an analog modeling synth so I am thinking with a guitar, a few choice effects like dirt and fuzz, my El Capistan, my amp, an SM58, and some drum loops it could go pretty far as a one stop music production rig that is at least semi-portable....it is kind of big 18" x 16" and it weighs 20 lbs....but there is plenty of bigger and heavier pieces of gear that will do less and it would let me sell some other shit off.

Yeah...I think it could function as a kind of "Mothership" for me.

How does he like it?

I'm on the trail of a 5000 for $1099. Seems like a great deal. Anyone want to convince me to take a different path?

While I think it's a good deal, for that kind of money, you could probably by a vintage MPC 3000, which is by far the best MPC Akai ever made. It may not have the modern convenience of falsh memory, but the sound... ahh the sound.

I guess I like the idea of some of the modern conveniences of the 5000 including the 8 tracks of hard disk recording.....would be nice to be able to use this as an all in one as I don't have a computer to use for recording right now. I am hoping the sound won't be too degraded in relation to the 3000.
