DADGAD is my favorite altered tuning. the most prominent places folks will have heard this tuning are from Jimmy Page, who uses DADGAD for "Black Mountain Side" (which he stole verbatim from Bert Jansch) as well as "Kashmir," and from Richard Thompson, who uses DADGAD extensively on acoustic and electric guitar.
the nice thing about playing chords in DADGAD is that you can voice open chords by moving the 1st/2nd and 6th string fingerings up two frets while keeping the rest of the chord stationary. but my favorite thing about DADGAD is the droning quality with open strings for the tonic/4th/5th combined with the multiple hammer-on/pull-offs available to add flatted/raised tones to chords.
BTW "Cortez the Killer" is in "double dropped D" tuning, same as "Cinnamon Girl," "When You Dance," and other fun Neil tunes in the key of D: DADGBD.

DADGAD is my standard tuning on guitar. I also use Aen standard DADAAE which sounds really cool. Lots of easy, nice sounding chord shapes that work all the way up the neck.

Ironically, DADGAD is just about the only non-standard tuning that doesn't seem to work for me...

Now I've been sucked into this jank.
I've never been able to grasp alternate tunings, but I've been jamming DADGAD for the past hour and it's beautiful.

This. Is there like a tutorial somewhere or some kind of basic lesson related to alternate tunings, or do I just have to play Sonic Youth songs until I get it?
