I can't help but associate high gain with scooped metal or 80s crud...so i never pursued any.

Did he use enough mojo?
Seriously, could be that he used the wrong kinds of components.. some "tone", that is, audio coloring is due to using slightly cheaper or more exotic components for resistors, caps, etc. Getting the caps right has a huge effect on the bass/mids/treble of the pedal. Could be ceramic caps, electrolytic caps made from mylar, polyester, etc.
