Yeah, it's not overly prominent, but they way it makes certain notes ring out just always kicked my ass.

That's generally how I use ring modulation...With the blend sort of low to give certain notes a (for lack of a better word) "strange" character.

I like the Fredric Effects Grumbly Wolf distortion/ring mod. Though it can be a bit chaotic, I prefer a setting where the ring mod is subtle and adds a harmonic overtone in the upper register.

I dig that Grumbly Wolf, seems to have a big range. The Atomic Clock looks pretty cool too. It reminds me a bit of the AntDroid I have, a real blast. I really gotta do a vid demo of it.

I had a Snarling Dogs Mold Spore for a while. A wah with a ring mod. Pretty much an over the top effect. It was great being able to control the ring effect wah-like. I didn't have it long tho, build quality was pretty poor.

I have a ringmod on my Boss GT6-B, that's the only reason I use it occasionally when I am in the mood for making noise with just the pedals.. Think I will get a ringmod somewhere 2011..

This Randy's Revenge seems pretty damn cool. Must investigate more...

As for the Moogerfooger, I love it. So much versatility and phantasmagorovich is correct. Get the right setting and it's like being transported into Spacemen 3 "Being John Malckovich" style.

I'm a big fan of the Moog Ring Mod (surprise, surprise...) It can do all of the classic ring modulation junk as well as really great tremolo (with sine or square waves.) The ring mod on the Moog can be very clean and musical, especially when the carrier input is used in the back to adjust the frequency on the fly. Maybe not the most practical in a live set-up, but you can definitely split your guitar single and have it modulate itself, have the bass player modulate the guitar player, etc. etc. This is one way to stay in key/tune with the song. I've also found the Moog Ring Mod to NAIL that Miles Davis "On The Corner" era Chick Corea tone when applied to Fender Rhodes.

Also - more frequency modulation than ring modulation - but I really dug the Copilot FX Caracol when I played it. Here's a demo of some different keyboard tones modulating some guitar chords. The fuzz in the Caracol sounds awesome too!

I've got a Montreal Assembly C. A. Ring Mod and it's a lot of fun. The loop and photosensitive expression controller make it interesting. The clean and dirty volume knobs are useful.
It's really fuzzy, though. I wish there was a way to control that.
