Still waiting for my Ruby, but it can't be too far away.

I thought the demo video for the Ruby sounded fucking awesome. I am completely unsurprised to hear that the pedal you got doesn't sound like the video. This was my experience with the Aenima. The one I received sounded absolutely nothing like the demo that she recorded. I modded it back to Torn's Peaker spec... still way too much gain to actually make musical sounds. I remember posting on the original devi forum, essentially saying "Damn, mine does not sound anything like that video," and the response was basically, "Oh well- Different gear makes different sounds."

I agree that this is true. Different players with different rigs can make the same pedal sound different, but in my experience there is always at least a similarity, or else we wouldn't have things like a signature "big muff sound." It's like how the volume knob on the Hype I bought had to be cranked waaaaaay up to get to unity gain- again, this is counter to the demos I've seen and the experience of fellow forumites. The pedal's base sound was there, and unlike the Aenima, I copped a lot of tones from the original video- it was just quieter than I'd expect.

I think it's an indication that there isn't a lot of quality control going on. I obviously don't have 5 of the same DE pedal to open up and compare, but I'm betting that as long as a value is "pretty close" and the pedal works, it goes out for sale.

You're on spot pretty much from my experience. Ask anyone with a workhorse about quality control Also I have owned two of the same pedal at the same time before [cherry pop] and while both were muddy and fuzzy they were very different. One had almost twice the output of the other and had more lows, while the other had the basic sound and was more controllable but didn't have that "something" the other did.

There's really this awesome alternative rock fuzz when she turns the volume up on her guitar, but I couldn't really get anything even close out of mine. Chords on mine are wooly and the gate makes the single notes really synthy and kinda crappy for leads. It makes for a decent overdrive when you roll back on your volume, though. Don't get me wrong, it's still a cool pedal, just definitely not what I thought it would be.

Yeah... I'd call that a cop-out. There is going to be some measure of difference from pedal to pedal, depending on the tolerance of the parts you're using, but not so much as to have two pedals sound completely different.

There is definitely some truth to any two (or more) of the same pedal sounding different because of parts tolerance. This is especially true for pots, which often have +/- 20% tolerance.

But still, any given pedal of the same circuit should sound fairly close to all the others. I think the way most of Devi's circuits are biased might be the issue. Even with modern silicon transistors, gain can be all over the place, and if you don't a fair have bit of negative feedback going on, that can really wreak havoc in a delicate bias situation.

I also imagine it's hard to QA a lot of Devi pedals. I mean, you plug it in, hit a chord, see if it sounds broken...if it does, you know it's set up "right." The problem being that maybe the busted sound you heard in the video won't be the mis-biased gated mess you hear from the unit you end up with.

She is or can be,
She and I have been friends from way way back, pre website, when E-13 first started.

I have a bunch of her pedals and none sound exactly like the demos.
Some are actually much better.
I prefer the first version of the Aenima which seems to be darker than the later ones.

I also found that they all respond differently to voltage control. Some come more alive when starved and others get glitchy and garbled.

Every one is an experiment, so you really have to play around with them to get the best (subject to personal tastes) out of them.

Yep just read about that...interesting. I wouldn't mind a switch in case I wanted to go back.

I actually wasn't much of a fan of the pedal at first blush, but I'd like to be able to A/B the brightness and see if it made a difference before I tried to pass it on.

But yeah, the US...can't praise it enough.
Easily the best of all the Devi's I played and will always be a staple on my board.

You guys like the US that much? I was thinking about trying out a shoe gazer but maybe I'll try the US first. Doesn't seem that great from the demos

most useful devi pedal i have tried is the fuzzhugger dark boost...

the devi never is pretty awesome too...

oh and the electric brown and year of the rat are fucking awesome!!!

The YOTR is the only one of her pedals I haven't tried...you don't see many on the used market
