Indeed. I was 13 when In Utero came out, and was blown away with how BRUTAL Scentless Apprentice and Milk It sounded. So different from Nevermind, it was hard to believe it was the same band.

In Utero is one of my favorite records of all time. I know what you mean about those two songs, so heavy. Especially Milk It, such a rager.

I really like Big Black, and I like his theory on recording drums: just get a kit that sounds good acoustically, record it in a decent room with decent mics, and you won't have to worry about polishing it up with eq and samples and what have you.

Not only is his fee considered very reasonable, but its a flat fee. That is, he refuses to take points on an album; he has said that he considers it theft for a producer to take points on an album. Which certainly cost him the chance at a HUGE fee in the case of In Utero.

he engineered Journal For Plague Lovers last year for Manic Street Preachers. I cannot recommend that album enough.

I personally was always puzzled by the decision to have GY!BE be recorded by Albini. They seem like polar fucking opposites and it always just struck me as a bad idea on both sides

What would you call the loud guitar sound on "In Utero"? How would you describe it? How would you fit it into a pedal? Bridge/neck/middle pickup?

I know these kind of questions can be tiring... but I've been soooooooo into "In Utero" lately... and I really REALLY love the loud guitar sound on that record.

I also know that it was Mustangs and Jaguars and a DS-2... but STILL.

Plus he's one of the few guys that will charge you a fair price for recording on tape, and understands live room sound dynamics for recording. And if you've got they money, he'll record you, even if you're a nobody. (They did add a protools rig recently, I heard through the grapevine, due to the other producers begging for it. Before, they only recorded to tape.)

Overrated dude? Maybe. He's pretty cool, does his own thing, is highly opinionated. That makes him threatening for a lot of people that want to tow the line and don't come up with their own opinions.

In Utero is amazing and Milk It is definitely one, if not THE, high point. Albini really works wonders with drum sounds, fuckin' skins sounded huge on that album!

he reminds me of that one kid in high school whose entire ideology was based upon a kneejerkish avoidance of anything considered "popular" or "mainstream," mostly due to himself not being accepted into this more mainstream crowd at some earlier point.
