Briefly, yea..but we only had one class of that..it was mostly for soundtrack/voiceover training, and the more esoteric "what makes this sound/music particularly effective in this piece of film?" studies.

I love Logic. I can't imagine using other DAWs anymore.
My friend does a lot of his work in an older version of Sony ACID though. Works really well for his sampling projects.

which has yet to bear any kind of fruit such as a job.
I have tried Reason and Logic before, but never could really get into them that much..just not what I'm used to.
By the way, Raytownian..those tape recorders look awesome..I dunno if I'd ever be able to figure out how to use them...but dey so purty

oh god this is a grim outlook since im also doing pro tools as part of my degree in engineering

I'm taking an intro to recording class and I already hate it... I was under the impression (according to the course description) that we'd be learning to make basic ANALOG recordings, and apparently we're going to be working in Sonar or something.
Dammit, I WANTED TO BE STEVE ALBINI JR., not some dude who paid money to learn how to use a DAW... I mean, I went into this hoping I'd learn specifically how to improve ANALOG recording techniques, not some bullshit like this. There's absolutely nothing wrong with DAW's, but it's just got nothing to do with how I operate... I have no real need for a DAW for multi-tracking (only half-assed self-mastering)... I wouldn't have signed up for the course if it was described as "pay us so we can tell you how Sonar/PT works".
Also, the instructor thinks
Rap music is "NOISE"... I can't imagine what he'd think of my shit if RAP = NOOOOIIIIISE in his mind... He makes it a REQUIREMENT that our final projects be musical and have "melodic lines", even though the class is about recording, not composition... I am not too excited... I hate that he makes musicality more important to our grades than fucking understanding HOW TO PRODUCE SOMETHING.
Also-also, StudioShutIn, the Realistic recorder in particular IS SO FUCKING GREAT. I love it, seriously... It's probably the best sounding tape recorder I've ever owned. I can't wait 'til I have the opportunity to try recording live shows with it.

PS: here's an excerpt of some bullshit I recorded to the Realistic recorder tonight that I ripped with Goldwave:
http://drop.io/realistic_recorderNo edits. Shit's CLEAN!
I can't stand it.
EDIT: BTW, the drop.io audio preview compresses the audio, so the preview won't sounds quite nice as the downloaded file.

Your instructor sounds like a real amateur.
To be a good engineer you need to be able to pinpoint what works and what doesn't in EACH GENRE OF MUSIC. Sure, you may not like rap or some other style of music, but you should be able to appreciate what makes it special and how you can implement the nuances into different songs that you mix down.

big tick
i have a love of all music i love rap and rnb to noise to jazz to slutty pop music i think to be a good engineer u have to really observe each genres craft and hone in on there techniques of music making its like half learning half technique ive been thrown a few curveballs e.g mixing jazz over my short time and learnt alot about how they want things, coming from loud rock n roll. its pretty darn cool

This is probably the reason he is teaching and not actually working as an engineer. Although teaching has seemed to really stoke his ego to the point of retardation.

Yea..sounds like you got a bad instructor. I never had this problem, really..though to be fair we never used analog recording methods.
However, we did learn analog mixing methods..that's a whole different ball-game.
To be a good engineer you really do have to have a grasp on all kinds of music, and what makes them sound good, because what works in one, will NOT work in another.
I may not like country that much..but I recorded and mixed a CD of it for my final project...so yea...

To those using logic, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like Logic is built a little more for the "musician," and Pro Tools is more for the engineer, although Logic can also go as technical as Pro Tools.

Sounds exactly right to me! I haven't used Pro Tools but I know a friend who also learned it in school and those are pretty much the same sentiments he has.
