I keep the volume on my guitar all the way up, but ocassionally adjust the tone knob. I prefer to get a sound I like and just leave it as is.
Are any of the pedals listed so far good for this sort of thing? I mainly want an OD to use as a sort of 'canvas' on which I can then layer other effects.

StudioShutIn wrote:hmm sounds like most of the votes are for the Groundswell and the Singing Tree. I like the idea of the singing tree..from what I can tell, it gets a sound not far from what I had in mind. However, I'm curious about how it compresses. In the video, it sounds like it compresses the living daylights out of your signal (but that could just be YouTube shenanigans).
Unlike alot of guitar players, I actually like overdrives that compress alot, because I have kind of a light touch and have issues with getting some overdrives to even 'trigger', because I dont always pick hard enough to reach the threshold at which the drive kicks in.
Alot of that is indeed Youtube shenanigans. The cool thing about the Singing Tree is the "Threshold" knob. It adjusts the amount of diode clipping, from no clipping to full on. It's helpful because you can go from very clear, transparent, open drive to thicker, compressed, more focused kind of stuff.
Tom's demo here kinda goes along with what I'm saying:

Singing Tree is pretty cool. Can I also reccomend the Electroharmonix LPB-2ube? It's basically a stereo tube overdrive. You can cascade one side into the other for heavier stuff, and one of my favorite tones involves sandwhiching an OK between the two sides of the LPB.

rargh

this is a dilemma...On one hand, YouTube is a handy resource for finding gear demos..on the other hand, I can't trust the sound.
I should also ask..are there any OD's out there that tame hi-end, without subsequently goosing low-end? My guitar, despite being rather bright, is also semi-hollow, and kinda booms in the low end.

As with any other time someone asks for a pedal suggestion...
A rat.
They're tits.

yea I had actually thought about the Rat (or one of the numerous heavily-modded copies.)
Is the Rat only able to do hi-gain sounds, or can it do lighter stuff too? I'm really not that familiar with the pedal, but I do like the sounds I have heard of it.

One of mine I always keep on as pretty much an OD...Gain around 10:00 and filter around 11:30.
And then you can bend it over like Pam Anderson...

if you also enjoy bone crushing low end, try the supercollider. I love mine.

Actually I'm trying to avoid "bone-crushing low end". I'm more looking for midrange, not alot of lows, and atleast the ability to reduce highs as needed.
Does anybody here have experience with Outlaw Supply? They offer pre-built kits of BYOC, GGG, and basically any other DIY pedal kits on the market. (and yes, I'm ok with that.)
I'm kinda interested in the Infested (a clone of 3 Rats, plus 3 drives that are off-shoots of the basic circuit) and the Hell Razor (a Marshall ShredMaster clone)

How much is the Infested? I'm too lazy to look, but I'm guessing the 3 rats are a Classic, Turbo, and Ruetz Rat, which is a pretty basic mod from what I've heard...
If I didn't already have both those pedals I would've gotten this in a heartbeat.

i would go with the arc flash. its on the lighter settings its a really great dirty overdrive, and then it goes into way beyond. its super versatile. and cheap.

In reply to FutureSailors, the Infested is 170, I think. the 3 Rat versions it offers are a Rat, a Rat 2, and a Turbo Rat.
