Buzzaround! It's what a muff should sound like, but all growed up. Robert Fripp's favourite fuzzbox.
There are lots of Buzzaround clones kicking around now since Dave Main traced it. It's exactly what you want.
The DAM is the biz, but impossible to find and very expensive if you did find one; Skinpimp does a really good one; also Montgomery, Basic Audio, I think Creepy Fingers did one...

This is the DAM

2nded on the Buzzaround. I purchased a clone from Rockness Monster, and it's AWESOME on guitar. Unfortunately, when I touched base with him a couple of months ago to see if he might be able to build another for a guitarist friend, he was pretty booked up... but the schematics should be pretty findable if you know a builder / cloner.

You might also want to look into a Harmonic Percolator - I know a few people who swear by these, in the same reverent tones (tone of voice, not guitar) as people who swear by the Buzzaround. I know that Frederic Effects makes a percolator clone that some people said was good - http://www.fredric.co.uk/effects/index.php?content=harmonicpercolator

Gilmore uses a civil war big muff. I read an article where he said he a/b it against a bunch of other muffs including other civil war muffs and none of them sounded like his. early floyd he was using a fuzz face.

That sounds pretty cool alright! I could probably get someone to build one for me. It is maybe a little generic sounding though, I remember Robert Fripp saying back then that most Fuzz boxes sounded kinda the same so it didn't bother him too much which he used.

I think I want something that's usable, but you can also turn it up and have it to do something silly.

In that case, Elka Dizzytone. It's almost the same circuit as the Buzzaround, but can also sound like having your face chewed off with a rusty chainsaw. Ian Sherwen builds a great clone.

the fuzzhugger CHALICE is very well behaved if you set it that way, since it has separate GAIN, FUZZ, and VOLT controls......it can get almost overdrive like tones, and can also GO CRAZY if you want it to........ABSYNTH can be pretty well behaved too, but that one PREFERS to go crazy :joy:

Fuzz should ALWAYS be both "USABLE" & "MUSICAL."

There's a really nice looking Algal Bloom on TGP right now.... $75 bucks shipped. I might've bought it, if I didn't have a Fingerprint on the way...

I'm pretty sure gilmour only used a civil war muff for a year or two in the 90s. . . although its good for that gilmour tone.. the muff your thinking of is the rams head muff. That's the one he used from the late 70s up to the 90s( i think). Early floyd stuff is using a fuzz face, up until the mid seventies.

I'm starting to think I probably just need a better amp for my Big Muff.
