What's your rig?
I'd probably suggest a nice amp/ guitar before you start loading on with effects. Other than that, I'd look at the groundswell OD, or maybe the greatwall from Fuzzhugger. Maybe a Woolly Mammoth clone.
And if your looking at 70's type stuff look at the newer danelectro pedals. That univibe would probably be pretty sweet as would the chorus and trem.

This. Realistically, you'll want to save up for a better bass and amp (and cables and stuff like that) before you start going apeshit with the fuzz. What you want is a great fundamental for the sounds to go over, although using the pedals in conjunction with you gear for your core sound is no biggie. I do it.
It also depends on other factors as well. Do you do slap? Do you play with a pick, of with fingers? Do you like a fairly dark clean, or is your bass somewhat bright? Do your pickups suck, or are they decent? It doesn't matter about what we tell you, it matters what you like. I could give you all of my favorite pedals and gear, and you could hate it. Everyone hears everything differently. Experiment, little buddy. Go to your local music store and try some shit out. Don't be afraid to take your bass along and rock out finding what you like. Then, when you have a tonal picture set and you find the gear that gives you that sound, save up and buy it!

Also every pedal we are talking about you need to dig up reviews and vids and clips of them. All part of standard procedure.

Also, I think you could cover alot of ground with just a Rat->Muff. Set the Rat for a boost (light dirt), and the muff for a bit more distorted, and then ram it with the rat for the heavy goodness.

Yeah... RATs on bass are a acquired taste though... But that's where I started: Vintage Rat and a Sovtek Muff, still have the muff but the RAT is long gone [I actually liked a ODB-3 better back in the day], but I miss it it every now and then .

my set up, don't pick at it....this is my first set up and i was kind of low on cash....
Bass: Ibanez GSR100EX, all stock parts (upgrades?)
Amp: I hate my amp. . .with a passion. BEHRINGER Ultrabass BT108 (1x8, 15 watt). Its noisy (bad kind) and it pops and shit...i hate it.
What is a good combo amp/cab and head unit? Anything other than this POS.
Peavey instrument cables, all 10', 1 red, 1 blue, and 1 yellow. . .getting an orange one monday.
Boss FZ-5 Fuzz Pedal (trade for EHX Bass Big MUff anyone?)
Acer Laptop with FLStudio 9 "Fruity" Edition and a new ASIO Soundcard with 7.1 surround, along with a lexicon alpha instrument interface
and of course, myself.

Cool cheap old bass amps that will rip a B-ring a new one you guys ask.
80's and early 90's Peavy. You can get a amp that will cut pro gigs if you spend some time looking on CL, pawn shops and music stores that sell old shit.

I'm gonna be listing a mid-80's Peavey Mark VI for sale in a day or so. It's a fantastic amp, is crazy versatile and puts out tons of power for the money.
