That amp is fixed bias. Even if you can adjust the bias fixed refers to the bias scheme rather than if it's adjustable or not

I've had the Jet City 50w head now for a few weeks and really liking it…but i would like to refine the sound a bit. I've heard another one which has upgraded tubes and it sounds really nice.

does anyone have any suggestions for preamp valves and positions? For power tubes i'm going with a pair of JJ 6L6GC's

I don't know if anyone was interested in this to start, but the thunderbird or not but I'm now going for a straight sell. If anyone here buys it, I'll let you have it for $425 instead of $450.

I preferred the first one myself, but the cleans on the second were a little more... I dunno... bouncy. The first one had a burly midrange that I really liked with distortion, while the second one, the Emperor, was a little more mushy and sizzly. I'm not sure if that's an accurate description, so I hope you know what I mean.

They're good speakers. They're discontinued now and were replaced by the slightly higher powered G12K100's. They're essentially the same speaker, and sound similar, but the 85 watt naturally has a little more give and isn't quite as modern as the K100. Both really good speakers for any kind of heavy metal. They're a bit stiff and sterile for blues or other genres, but they excel at low-end reproduction and keep everything clear, punchy, and tight. I've not actually tried an 85 watt speaker in a long, long time, though, so it might be different than I remember. They're also excellent speakers to pair with more organic sounding ones, or models with more bite since they're a dry speaker.

I missed out on seeing Neurosis over three years ago when they toured with Kylesa or someone like that. I knew of their music back then, but I didn't have any records and wasn't the massive fan I am now. And I agree. I wouldn't pay more than €500 for a cabinet unless I absolutely had to. Any more than that and I just can't justify it. I know it's a crucial part of the sound, and I know companies need to make a living, but I don't think it's a reasonable price. Companies like Diezel with their €1000 cabinets, it baffles (no pun intended) my mind when someone can pick up a Zilla Cab for almost half that price with the same specs and dimensions and built in the UK.

I heard Groove Tubes and JJ's work nicely in the preamp. To be honest, though, tubes are so variable that you may actually find you prefer the stock tubes. Of course, there's no harm in trying new ones, but those that say there is huge difference between stock and JJ's are either hearing things the rest of us cannot or they're over-exaggerating what they are hearing. Although I modified my Jet City to death, I never changed the tubes. I never needed to. They were fine.

The 4x12 and 2x15. I'm gonna rock the half stack for a while until I can find a black Matamp 2x15 or a black orange 4x12 I can convert into one.

I agree whole heatedly with you assessment. The Matamp is thicker and fuller while being scooped in the right place. I broke out the seven string last night and it sounded even better. The Emperor would cut through a dense mix better but requires the 2x15 to get the lows the Matamp does on its own, plus the Matamp is noticeably louder.

Anyone have recommendations on inexpensive Marshall-type guitar cabs to keep an eye out for? Either 4x12 or 4x10 I guess.

I would shy away from Groove Tubes personally. As I understand it, they're essentially rebranded tubes made in the same factories and to the same specs as the other name brands, but they cost more. It was supposedly to offset the cost of "testing" and getting the best tubes. You can order tested tubes of the name brands for less anyway. I just thought it was a waste.

If you do anything with the preamp, make sure you get several different types of tubes, that way you have maximum variability. Every tube has a slightly different character and will respond differently to every position. That said, I've both read and enjoyed the effects of using 12at7's in the last preamp stage (that phase inverter). I'm pretty sure made my amp a hair louder with better dynamics and touch sensitivity.

I like the Lee Jackson era Ampeg 412 I picked up a while ago. They're all over Guitar Center for $200 or less. I got mine for around $300 on CL, but the guy also changed the stock speakers for V30s. The cab itself is pretty solid.

AG, thanks for the reference to the g12K100's. I have a quad of those and am very familiar with the sound. I still have not heard back from duder but I'll keep after em and will keep an eye out for a seller who actually returns messages.

I would watch out on the 80's crates, the one I had was full sized, fiber board construction though, did not hold up to abuse. It developed a nasty buzz and I fixed it up a few times but over time the wood was just coming apart to much.

I just listened to your clip and to throw my opinion in the ring: I liked the cleans on the second better (emperor?) but the distortion on the first better. The distortion on the first had a much more burly feeling to it that sounded thicker while the second was much more narrow and cutting. Not bad but less thick.

And for the cheap cabs. The dude from rosetta posted on his blog that he really likes crate cabs, I forget from when though. He changed the grill and put a sunn badge on it so that he can laugh as people compliment his sunn when underneath it is a crate. For bass cabs I have a gallien kruger 2x10 goldline from a few years ago. The speakers in it are not so hot but the sturdiness of the cab is solid and the dimension are right in a sweetspot that if I shopped around for the right speakers it would be an awesome 2x10. I haven't switched them out because I haven't played bass in a while but I have hung onto the cab just in case. If you can find one it should be just around a 100 bucks.
