Yah, Kris Davis! The more "composed" material made me think of the last show I went to before the pandemic, part of a festival where the night's headlining set was her + Ingrid Laubrock.
Though probably the most I've listened to Kris Davis is alongside Tony Malaby and Nick Fraser (who's one of the local guys I used to catch all in the time in a lot of improvised groups). This album is very good stuff.

I like that album cover.
Funny you should mention Laubrock, I listened to this the other day:
Oh, yeah! That Thing/McPhee is gonna warm me up like a cup of cocoa.
Edited to add: my biggest memory of seeing The Thing (nine years ago?! Sigh.) was Gustafsson replacing his reed like a dozen times, which I think was partially performative to show, "I am shredding so hard."
Also them covering Suicide (which I got a nice recording of.) And also a particularly bounteous merch table.

ha - Laubrock's been on my listening list lately too
ain't nobody throwin' shade at Sonny Blount, but last i checked he didn't *come up* in Germantown, tho he certainly did do it proud by abiding there....
[and while we're at it, we also ain't throwin' shade at John Gilmore, Odean Pope, Bootsy Barnes, Bayard Lancaster, Philly Joe Jones, Khan Jamal, Kevin and every other Eubanks, Stanley Clarke, Grover Washington, every Piece of the Dream, and the waaaay too long list of others that either lived in Germantown/Mt.Airy/Nicetown, studied at Settlement or cut their teeth in the clubs along Germantown Ave., let alone the long list of local native visitors from South and West Philly that maybe came up through Granoff but surely passed through Germantown on their way as well....] phillyjazz
*but just to keep the piece in the fambly, i've amended my original post

Would've loved to've been at this club when they recorded this:
Lenny: "mine eyes shall suck all of thy diminished parental secrets from thine very fingerboard, then shall i will bestride the guitaring world like a colossus!"
Pat: "you...wat?"
Me: "let's just leave Al Kooper out of this, shall we?"
