The problem I'm having is that it's not an aggressive enough tone and the neck is not nearly as fast playing as my Musicman basses were. All that could be strings. I dunno. New rounds and a proper set up, then I'll re-analyze. Otherwise I'm going to get a Rick or another Musicman. I'd get a Status but I don't want to feel like a Muse fanboi...heh. :p

Now that you're about 10 basses removed from that sweet 25th anniversary deal, do you regret it?

Yes

My amp doesn't have one. Might think about a B7K.

soooooooooo.... i got empirical audio evidence of the differences between DI and mic when we recorded a week or so ago. we tracked all the scratch takes for Paul with me DI'd, he played to those and a click then i recorded mic'd to his good takes and a click.

but listening to the differences in the booth.... clean, pretty close. dirt, pretty close. filter and mod stuff, different, but not in a bad way. fuzz? fucking. HORRIBLE. even if it was fuzz into the Pitch Factor or some other heavy mod.

ugh. never DI again live. unless it's such a fight i'm gonna get fucked if i push it. but UGH.

This is interesting...I've started recording my practices with the Akai > MacBook and a DI only (no mics yet), but eventually I'd like to do a mixed thingy w/DI and a mic'd cab together. Have you tried this and did it work any better?

yah. it didn't help that much for me, the things i like blended i have blends in that pedal and set to where i want them.

the guy we worked with was good, but he's not a top level engineer. with somebody that had way more experience, i could see having the DI, or even a split of the bass straight to the board, being something good to have to work with.

OOF. i DID just spend about an hour playing around with both my boards. i'm such a slacker it's the first time i've had both boards cleanly wired, to separate channels of a power amp into different cabs.

GUH. TWO DIFFERENT FUZZES AT THE SAME TIME IS AWESOME.

having a clean or clean -> Bug going out one amp while the Pitch Factor was Arp Wobbling was fucking fantastic too.

yay!

Well I would be DIing into a sampler, so that I could warp it and make it unrecognizable. I am in the camp of DI sucks, especially with fuzz. Although last time I was in the studio, with a really good engineer, we did a DIed signal before the board and dude did a nice sounding mix. But yeah Mic everything is better.

The guy who's been helping me w/recording info in general (and he really does know what he's doing) recommended I try the mixed approach; DI and two mics...a kick mic and something like an Audix i5 or Shure SM57 and experimenting with where to place the mics (note that I have one cab with a tweeter and another with a tweeter and a mid driver).

I have DI's on the back of my amps and the Rusty. That's about all I can contribute.

DI on the Rusty reminds me...is there any audio difference between a mic-cable DI (with the 3 pins) and a 1/4" line-out (like what's on the Rusty), or is it just a different physical connection?

Not sure but the Rusty would actually be easier to plug into my sampler...

gimme gimme gimme GIMME.

to use the old joke format from the hood, "when they said 'tentacles' he thought they said 'pentacles' and said 'i play eeeeeebil music, so give me one that's upside down."

OK, it's not that funny, but at least i tried.

I think the line out on the rusty is balanced so it would be 1/4" TRS and no difference other than the connector.
A lot of using a Di for recording and sounding good depends on the desk. I have gotten beautiful fuzzed out bass running straight into the seat but it was a Neve and going to 2" tape. I like using both mic and DI, but I usually cut out a lot of highs on it.

oh jia. and fucking tweeters? UGHHHHH. dunno how you guys use them. there's tweeters on the Aggy GS 12 series. i plugged up both boards for the first time last night and the bass was all clicky and the fuzz just sounded like a blown speaker through the 2 GS112's through the second board. after trying different cables and sides of the power amp and cabs i thought either the power amp was blown on one side or the speakers were crapped. then i checked the tweeters and they were turned up. turned them off, sounded great.

FUCK. TWEETERS.

also, WOOOOOO. so much LOOT to play with.

Don't say you guys and twatters...I FUCKIN HATE THEM

Tweeter PROTIP: If you hate them, but play any distorted/ high-freq sonds through yr cab, DON'T turn them down. The attenuator functions as a sponge for high frequencies, and turning the tweets down sends all that energy into the attenuator which can BURST INTO SMOKE. Instead, open up the cab and disconnect the tweeter wires, then make sure you leave the attenuator all the way up. Or, just take out the whole crossover apparatus completely. Trust me on this.

I almost always find bass cabs to be way too muddy when the tweeters are off. :idk:
