As far as I can tell, Jaco was the first electric bassist to "get taken seriously by serious musicians."

Charles Mingus dug Jack Casady, and went to see the Airplane in the SF clubs.

Incidentally, Charles Mingus is the only "real" bass player (jazzer on the upright) who's music I actively seek out and listen to.

Mingus was more than just a bass player, but there're lots of amazing jazz bassists. You're missin' out.

That's what I mean. His compositions are rad.

But uh, feel free to drop some knowledge dude. My proper jazz credentials are seriously lacking.

Whewwwwww. Finally caught up with a week's worth of chatting that I had missed. Being on the road so much cuts into my ILFing time.

I realize how much this says about me, unfortunately... But for the most part, I just can not get into jazz. I can't do it. I'm too simple. I try... I want to like it. I just don't. I appreciate it. I understand the talent it takes. But... I can only take a few minutes and I'm out.

Don't feel bad...I don't get most jazz either, in spite of being raised by an audiophile father with about 300 or so jazz recordings.

Mingus is about the only jazz musician i listen to any more, and it's all because of his compositions, which combine ideas of harmony and dissonance from modern classical music with emotion that just floors me. i've said in the past that if i had to take one album with me to the proverbial desert island, it would be Mingus Ah Um, because all of what it means to be human is in there.

when it comes to jazz, i don't enjoy a lot of it any more because the writing is boring or, as noted above, its major purpose seems to be to impress the listener with the player/players' facility. that's "facility" in the sense of "facile." other than Mingus, my favorites are Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Anthony Braxton, whose compositions are very different but consistently interesting. but if i live to be 1000, i don't ever need to hear another saxophonist playing kyped Charlie Parker riffs over "I Got Rhythm" changes.

I really like Madlib's album of Blue Note remixes.

And his work with Yesterdays New Quartet (which IMO should be required listening).

Shafi Hadi is one of my favorite saxophonists.

"Haitian Fight Song" slays me every time.
