So, what do you guys think of the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live action movie? Had sort of forgotten about it, but saw that there's a new trailer thingy. Not too stoked on the choice of director and writer, but both probably have potential, and the source material is great, so... it might turn out ok?

the one thing that got me with the original, is the people dubbing, sounds like their sitting down at a reherseal table read....like in akira all the characters dubbed sound like their in the movie...idk had to throw that in there.
..But fuck anything these days...Its just over...everything after 2000 is bullshit to me...there are some alright maybe even great movies after 2000...but its all shit...just look at the new starwarstartrek crap i cant tell which is which anymore, same director=same crap...

I really like how in the original the garbage collector gets told his whole life/kids/ wife is not real...thats some PKD stuff that always gave me the good willys/chills....from what i saw/remember in the trailerof ghost in the shell... its seemed like "OHHHHHH, your in for another blade running treat...its dark..its serious...its...ooour fuuutureeee" (in movie phone voice)

just went out for a smoke in my garage, and found the guyver movie!...that was me favorite as a wee lad...pretend a had bio armor...watch out yall..im about to start gettin all alien up in this hootch.

I'm looking forward to it, but I'm also prepared to be disappointed. We'll see, have to admit I like the clips I've seen so far. But who knows.

As for the whole "whitewashing" thing, my understanding is that the original creator never stated that all the characters were asian in the first place?

I'm super into Ghost In The Shell and have genuinely invested a significant amount of money supporting the franchise. Not particularly bothered by the film because the best case scenario is that it's a 6.5 or 7/10 film or else it'll do the same thing as every other Anime or Game movie and bomb. You just can't do that kind of subject matter without it looking dorky with physical actors. The Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic and Dark City and had a finite amount of time where they were 'cool' and now they're just fun nostalgia movies to watch semi ironically. Ghost In The Shell is going to be "Po Faced the Movie" with Lens Fares and Neon lighting - but I'm honestly looking forward to seeing Cyberpunk nonsense on a big screen.

But then again, it's kind of annoying that the people that are putting GiTS on such a pedestal of high art when it's only just a great animated film. Like really, you're not going to enjoy anything if you nitpick everything and don't allow yourself to surprised by things.
You also can't talk shit on Bubble Gum Crisis either, they have literally nothing to do with each other and Ghost wouldn't exist without it.

I mean, it's context to one's life. I put GitS (And Serial Experiments lain, while we are at it) in such a high pedestal because they literally changed my life. There's a before and after point in who I was and my goals that is divided by me marathoning those two works side by side. I went on and did a post-grad in computer crime and terrorism because of it. And I'm not the only one. A lot of people putting GitS on a pedestal were those who were most malleable during the Adult Swim run of Stand Alone Complex, a time where the themes and setting of the show were starting to become more real, that resonates with people.

Granted I agree, it's not the best series of movies/TV series. But it had a knack of coming in at the right time.

Lain straight up fucked me up, but that's another discussion though. Never watch that series in one night, sleep deprived and with nothing but a tiny laptop screen to illuminate you.
