Yeah, that's all a good point, and yes it's terrible now.

i really, really need the film industry to quit cocking up PKD's work...it was bad enough when they did Catch-22 and The Long Goodbye (great books, dreadful movies) back in the 70s. and nobody should never, ever touch The Great Gatsby again.

I'll agree that's a close one. I can't call it because it's so close. There were scene in the book that made me cringe harder than the movie, but they are both really well done and Bale was amazing at Patrick Bateman. Brett Easton Ellis is definitely one of my favorite authors.

Did you know that Patrick Bateman's brother is one of the main characters in Rules of Attraction by Ellis (Patrick is also has a chapter dedicated to me I believe. it's been a minute so don't quote me on that).

That red part must have been wishful thinking. hah. It should say dedicate to HIM. LOL!

He has great ideas for how things work at this point in history as the lines between private thoughts and identity escape into the public sphere, often beyond our control. But the tendency for hollywood to reform his stories into action thrillers is just stupid. Most of his subject matter is psychological and metaphysical. Even in BR2049, that big ending fight scene, I just kept looking at the clock on my phone wondering when it would be over. It stuck out in such a weird way.

Yup!

Another fun fact - Christian Bale's stepmom was one of the people who really pushed to get the book banned upon its release in the 90s.

The Long Goodbye is one of Altman's best movies.

as a movie it's OK, but as far as being faithful to the book or to Chandler's aesthetic in general it's a fucking atrocity. Elliot Gould is about as non-Marlowe a Philip Marlowe as you could possibly get. Dame Judy Dench would be better.

this is a particular sore point for me since Chandler is one of my favorite American writers, and even the fairly good film versions fall way short.
