Think I'm gonna get me some blackwork after I get some other stuff done then. I already have a teensyweensy bit. Always dug Tim Cummerford's shit.

This is pretty much what I meant by Fight Club bullshit.

Ï think that would damage the tattoo artist more than it would me.

I don't get the whole black out thing or the ritual part they are trying to say has gone.
Tattoos have not changed that much in the last 50 years, it's the people who have changed. You can still get some old boring ass traditional shit if you want or you can go to someone who does modern day bad ass stuff. No offense meant to those who like the traditional style, I just hate it and always have. Some of it, when done right, can look good though. I also like neo traditional. Looks way fucking better IMO.
The pain side of it comes with the tattoo. I don't really get what they are doing here that makes it "brutal". I hear sped up and think, I welcome that. LOL. Please go faster! The long slow lines are the ones that hurt like a bitch bro! 30 needle shaders feel great compared to single line. If these dudes were hardcore, they'd get tabori tattoos. That shit looks god awful.
I've always been intrigued by tabori tats after seeing a dude with a full eagle chest piece that had been done in that fashion. It looked amazing and he had gone through some brutal shit to get it. I mean, that's fucking earning it.
So that's just my thoughts. LOL. To each their own.

Im with jwar.
Although I have nothing against modern blackwork (ive been considering a half sleeve/chest piece that was all black or block black with white over it, because that shit is amazing) that brvtal blck shit is just dumb.
Plus, looking at the dude, he has a few existing pieces scattered around his body, and then at some point, jumped straight to a forehead piece. Thats the clear indicator of a space cadet.
I'll take my conservative ink and head back to my heavily mortgaged suburban domicile now.

I already posted Scott Bourne in this thread but he's the first dude I remember with black limbs.
This is also him:
"I think tattoos are worthless. The only things that are real and true are validated in your heart. You never have to prove yourself to anyone, ever. You never have to express yourself to anyone, ever."

Yeah, that's some intense block of black he's got.
I'd want to fancy it up a bit like this, though:

Except make it all like a stylised version of John Howe's depiction of the architectural embellishments from Middle Earth, because I am a fucking nerd.

Also, I don't disagree with that, but as much as its inescapable that tattoos are read as "signifiers", I get them to please myself. I feel like its the culmination of an idea come to materialisation.
Kind of hard to explain, but I don't feel totally at ease until I've committed a concept to skin, and that may be because of the personal mantra/ritual/ideal involved. Maybe its just how I make things real to myself, I dunno.
And as much as it is fun to show ink off to others and share good work, I don't get it to do that. Most of the time people see my sleeve and make a judgment in the negative without getting to know me, and I've grown to sort of accept that as the default setting for most of the population and take it as a bonus if people are interested. So in the regard, I'm with the whole "nothing to prove" sentiment. Although, it is more like "I could give two fucks what you think of my appearance, talk to me".
Which may or may not turn me into King Aggresive Edgelord
I'm sure I'm not alone on that.

I meant your reference to what would appear to be incongruous suburban dadhood and being a tattooed bald'n'beard. I realize that this is self-serving, but I basically meant that subversion can look like a Molotov cocktail or like being a good person in a fucked-up place. Or lots of things in the middle.

lol. such hardcore edgy douchers of judgey douchiness.
fuck off. everybody gets tattoos for their own reasons, and it's nobody's fucking business but their own.

I'm sure I'm not alone on that.
For me, I made the mistake of getting my first tattoo because I thought others would like it. Then from the age of 18 to 19 I got tats that I also thought looked cool and weren't edgy but I felt as if someone would appreciate them. It wasn't until I was in my mid 20's that I decided that the idea of someone else's approval of what I placed on my body was just absurdly stupid.
So all through my 20's, I got tattoos for me and no one else. Things that have zero meaning to anyone but me and even at that, they don't have a deep meaning to me. The true meaning of my tattoos is I overcame pain and earned my markings. Each tattoo is a test to what I can take and put myself through. Kind of like these guys are doing but I don't want to mark myself all black and having it be non artistic as I love art and to me, that's half the point.
I have a few tattoos that have meanings, but for the most part it's just artwork.
The one on the left side of my chest is undergoing a forth laser treatment tomorrow. After I've blasted that shit enough, I'm getting a piece done that will be pretty large and I don't even know what it's going to be. I'm letting my artist decide. I give two shits because he's an artist and knows how to make cool as stuff. I want something dark and revolting. That's it. He'll do the rest and it will be amazing and I'll be happy.
People ask me all the time "what's the story behind your tattoos"? I respond "there is no story, I like the art and the experience". That's it. It doesn't make me an Edge Lord. LOL. It makes me an admirer of talent and art and love to test the boundaries of my own tolerance.
