i like the music for TAAS a lot but the singer gets annoying to me sometimes.

Sousie - hurm. problem is that most bands are gonna use a keyboard synth for synthy toanz. even Muse (blegh) doubles up a fair bit. electro pop bands i like a lot like Ms. John Soda and Ladytron use keys for the type of thick bassy synthy stuff we'd be aiming for with a pedalboard. El Ten Eleven gets synthy sometimes on bass, Battles has some crazy toanz and shits all over the place.

that's.... that's not very helpful.

So....it sounds like my issue is that there aren't pedals that do the synth stuff I'm having in my head.....it's mostly keys going into dirt?

it's just hella easier to use a synth than get a huge rig of stuff that will MOSTLY get Them Toanz yet be decent to shitty on the tracking.

so much simpler to bring a $300 Micro Korg and play parts on that.

Again, it's hard to say, and it's all about what specific synth sound you're trying to get. My originals board has multiple synths on it that I use for different shit. I have the EHX BMS for the big Moog-y sweeps and bubbly glitchy stuff. I use a Space Station for the string swells and ambient shit. And I use a Behringer BSY600 for just the straight lead synth tone.

And that's a huge part of my problem....I don't know the verbage. It's kinda like when I got into fuzz. I had no freaking clue what snyth fuzz, germanium fuzz, muffs, Russian.......what any of that shit meant. I really don't know what KIND of synth I'm looking for. So it makes my search hard. And I'm sure the wankers on TB don't have anything close to the taste I'm looking to get. I totally get the tracking thing. I'm looking to be a Southern conservative purist and stick mainly to my bass rig (aren't we gents charming in our stubborn unwillingness to change ;) )......so......if I'm looking to get that tone and stuff similar to that first TAAS song....what kind of synth am I looking for or what kind of verbage can I use in my search?

Is it really just bite the bullet and get a keysynth? :erm:

I would call that a pretty modern synth tone. So you're talking about the Boss/Behr/Deep Impact/Markbass SS family of pedz that could get close to that. The Deep Impact goes for like a G now, so I'd say either try out the Behringer and see if you like it, or drop the 2 bills to pick up a used Super Synth

the MB SS had some really cool stuff but.... i couldn't click with the way you can't adjust tones on the fly, the way you need it hooked up to a computer.

First gig tonight since I got my Dingwall! Also got. Mini Fuck in the mail today and I should have some time to find a good setting before I go off to the gig. I think the last time we played this venue was four years ago this week. It snowed 4 inches that day and today it's going to be 55.

So my board is getting pretty set....but it has some spaces.....and I have some cashes....I'm trying to think about where I can go with this and I keep getting stuck on that "synth" word. Now, I've always shied away from synth stuff. I don't like the funks. Or...I like it. I can jam some PFunk, I just won't ever play it. Same think with Electronica. And I have a Robot Factory Brain Freeze so I'm not looking for some wub wub wub wah stuff. Everytime I start looking at vids of pedals, I only see this stuff showcased in a 70's porn kinda way. I'm not the biggest fan of ring mods..........I dunno. I've always had the impression that synth was not for me. Is there some synth pedals out there that are more geared to be used in alt rock, indie bands and the such?

And I guess I'm not meaning synth fuzz. I have an Oxide. Love the Prunes and Custard. I'm kinda looking for something not combined with the fuzz......but CAN be combined with the fuzz. :poke:

I've done some stuff with this although we aren't really doing anything like this now. My goto was fuzz into something doing a detune (like a Polytope) into a static filter.

Whatever I do after this band finishes up, I'd like to do more of this.

Thanks. Deltz agrees with you, too. I had a STRANGE story with an MBSS once.

Back when I was an amateur at pedalphilia, like my 2nd or 3rd pedal was a Markbass Chorus/Flanger. It came in and it was fucking with my brain. I wanted to do Tool sounds.....and this thing didn't do it. It was all funky. Funkified sausage and shit. I plugged it into the comp and it was labeled Super Synth. I somehow landed a Super Synth housed in a Chorus/Flanger's body. Crazy true for realz. Musiciansfriend switched it out for me. I remember not digging it at all.....like.....just way more funky 70's than I would like. But I was really digging that TAAS sound.....so I guess I just don't like straight up synth and back then I wasn't able to see the uses it could have when mixed with dirt.

As for myself, I use a ton of synth stuff in my originals, but you'd probably call most of that electronica, so it's probably not what you're looking for.

MSUsousaphone wrote:Yes. That's the stuff that's in my head. The problem with my search is that most of the bass synth talk is on TB and we......well.....we know what directions those go in. What type of synth sound is going on in there? And people, please send me more stuff like that. Thanks, bro.

at least for the intro a Moog freq box can get damn close to that sound.... also a Last gasp art labs tone axe could get in the ball park. Really I gave up on the idea that a "synth pedal" can get me any of the sounds I want and just use things that are what make up a "synth pedal" or a synth.... hence all the moogerfooers and the 4 foot pedal board... if I could do what is in my head with a nice allinone little box i would... god knoze it would be cheaper...
