Gradual improvements and additions. The lead 1 is a great synth and would probably outwork your novation. They were really good for the time, but check out vintage synth.
Also the amount of voices. I know the 3 expanded on that.
Try to get them down to 400-450. 500 is an OK price.
Lead 1 4-12 voice
Lead 2 - 16 voice
Lead 3 - different sound system 24 voice

I've repeatedly tried to suss out the same thing as they have always looked really interesting to me. Apparently there was also some designer changes in the line too so lots of people say that the 1 is the best, but I could never decide. Forrest asked about the Wave the other day and now that one looks really interesting too. Still, as a lefty their control layout really sucks for me so if I ever go for it it will be for one of the racks.

Hm, well I guess out goes my Goatkeeper. I don't use it enough anyway and honestly I don't like it that much.
edit: There's also a Juno-6 on CL for $600. Hard to decide to go for the Lead or would the Juno be a step up?

Juno-6 hands down.
Didn't mean to say the novation is bad...it is just a difference in durability I would think...Lead was made more for live performance is all. Novations are great synths. I also like the layout on the left, but seeing as you are a lefty ST, it might not make as much sense.
Awesome price for a Juno-6 if it is fully working. That chorus man! No patch memory or midi though, but who cares?
When my band first started it was Juno-60 (with broken patch memory), sid station, a hip-hop drummer, and me on ring mod guitar. It sounded awesome! The juno was such an awesome sound. He traded the sid station and juno-60 for a warwick bass and it all went downhill haha.
I dunno, I guess the juno would be more my style, I guess.
spacelordmother, I think I have heard the same thing about the line on the leads too, but I kinda lost track after the Lead 2 and just breifly checked out the Lead 3. I think the voices on the Lead 1 stack which decreases polyphony, but I don't remember (or remember if the 2 does that either). I dunno, never really seen any use for polyphony after 8 (or 4 for that matter...). Maybe multitimbral setups, maybe...the three also has FM possibilities...any of them will probably do neat stuff really.
Reading the comments on VSE, it seems that the 3 wasn't well liked as it went away from the VA style...and the Lead 1 is the most well liked. They were pretty pissy about everything...jeez.
I know some people prefered the Viruses. I dunno...way to far back in my memory.

I still haven't used my Novation to it's full extent, need to plug into the computer and have some fun with automap!
I'll probably never play a live performance using keys. Unless for some reason my drone/idm stuff I have in my head gets massive ().
I'll have to look into the Juno-6. He said the arpeggiator works but is a little wonky, other than that it has a clean bill of health.

The Nord is going to be deeper, but the Juno is one of those "mojo" synths and both are good live or in a studio/mess around situation. The nord will take more time to get into with all its controls and stuff but it works as a midicontroller too. The juno would be more instant gratification but more limited. The price is better on the juno than the nord in my opinion too. The code on the Lead 1 is unique like SLM said...the coder kept his stuff and took it with him when he quit so everything since is different and not as good sounding (and there are supposed to be glitches in there too which add character).

Oh my goodness.
I love the Small Echo Array. Especially running it into my new Fuck! Unfortunately, I have to give the SEA back in a couple weeks but i just might have to acquire one.

I loved the multi head mode on the El Cap and this thing just blows it out of the water. I would be seriously set for delay with this for rhythmic stuff or weird slapback and a tape style delay for everything else.
I love how easy it is to change delay patterns on the fly and how perfectly it sits on the edge of oscillation and the fact that there are separate wet and dry volumes that can both boost.
I'm in GAS.

Get that thing! Play 6 notes, adding them one after another, to make sure all the voices are functional.
