Try tinning it and then wiping it on the damp sponge quickly one time. Maybe you are already doing this though.

Also I want one of those fancy iron stations...

Throw the damp sponge out, get a solder tip cleaner with the metal brush material.

Clean your tip so that there's no globs of solder left on it after you're done on the board (ie, between each component)

And watch your heat! (if you have an adjustable station, assuming you do since it is a Weller)

I learned to solder from guys that were in the Navy in the 60's,70's,80's, so they did a lot of component replacement on boards (as opposed to now, they'd just replace the whole unit.) The problem with being a tech in the Navy is the saltwater air, things corrode immediately. So they taught me a lot about getting the temperature right, cutting the leads before you solder (if you cut the leads after you solder, you're leaving a metal that can corrode exposed to the air), properly tinning the tip, etc. Unfortunately, I've forgotten the exact details of most of it :picard: , but I can still solder decently.

A few more tips I thought of: Get the real solder, not the new lead-free stuff, with some sort of rosin-core if you don't have rosin. The new lead-free stuff sucks, a lot. Just don't lick your fingers after handling it and you'll be fine. Using real solder with rosin gives you what is known as flux -- the flux cleans the components where you're working and is supposed to boil away. This is where you want to get the heat and cleaning your tip right. If you are too cold, the rosin will glob all over the board and maybe even keep the solder from sticking to the PCB. If you don't clean your tip, you're going to be carrying a bunch of flux to the next component. Flux will corrode and the board will look ugly. I couldn't find any image examples but you get the idea. If you do end up with too much flux after the solder joint is complete, you'll want something like scotchbrite/steel wool to clean it up. There's a cleaner for this, too, you spray on and wipe off with a paper towel. I forgot the name.

Yes,...I want one of those.

Luckily there isn't much salt air around here. Car bodies last forever :)

It's an adjustable iron. The top row of resistors I did with a cold iron and I'm not as happy as I am with the bottom row done at a higher temp.

My pop was an Electronics Tech in the Navy,...he'd be pleased to see me doing this. I should probably send him an email.

You're already on your way to getting this down, but just keep trying to perfect those little metallic volcanos:

And ask your dad to give you a soldering boot camp. I bet you'll learn a lot!

There is actually a great video on youtube,..."How and Why to Solder to PCBs" or something like that.

I've been using 60/40 rosin core,... .75 mm,...

Thanks for the pic Mathias,...little bit of a confidence boost.

I'll be putting together a GGG CB1 in the next couple of weeks. I want to DIY a Beavis Board as well.

lulz. Fry is just ridiculously expressive for such a (relatively) poorly draw character.

i wanna have my head sewn onto a hot nerdy Amy's body. RARRRR.

Ok, look, I love you guys. We're supposed to be bitching about Talkbass and posting boobs in here. Not gore/rape/weird cartoons. Put that shit in the whatever thread or some other place. I want bitching and boobs people!! ACTUAL HUMAN BOOBS.

So our bassist finally went down to rent the practice space yesterday after a month and a half of him procrastinating. I find out today he just went and looked at it... He didn't bring our money and pay for it or fill out any of the paperwork...

wtf
