I'll probably get a cheap dimarzio tele humbucker and wire it in parallel, change out the tone knob for a push pull pot and have it go straight to the output in parallel to the other pickups (depending on how loud it turns out).

The guitar already has the series parallel mod, and I do enjoy the strangle switch and the rhythm circuit, so it's already got heaps of sounds.

I'm in the process of building a jazzmaster that'll be more conventional, so I don't really miss the trem.

turns out the Guyatone pickup is actually a little larger than a Tele pickup along the horizontal axis, and about the same width across the face. which is to say that assuming the aluminum plate could be modified fairly easily and that the pickup isn’t too wide, this could work. the only drawback is that they typically run around 3kΩ impedance and thus are fairly quiet, but if i cranked the pickup right on up it might do.

lighter for scale.

and i spotted one on eBay that reads 5.6kΩ which i snapped up after an hour or two of dithering. if i don’t do an offset Harp-o-caster, i already have one that’s ~2.8kΩ in the parts box and could easily snag a third to make a Teisco-caster or a funky Brian May thang. maybe something based on those old three-pickup Kay bodies or the like. or in one of those Vintage Revo Vision guitars, which are already about 60% Red Special DNA, though the stock pickups are nice.

having been searching parts on eBay i also got offers on a couple of cool necks i can’t use. though undeniably cool, they’re both 24.75” scale when most bodies require 25.5”, neither has tuner holes drilled, and the Kay has only 19 frets. i can barely deal with the 20-fret necks on the Wandré and Hopf. they really are bitchin’ enough that i spent awhile looking for a body that’d work with the National neck.

i suppose if one was particularly bold you could reshape the headstock and end up with a Les Paul almost as gaudy as the Gibson presentation models.

i had the bridge off the Esquire i’ve been putting together and took the opportunity to check the Teisco pickup against the cutout, and it’s approximately 1 mm larger all around than the cutout. which is to say that an aluminum plate should certainly be customizable. the question is, will the mounting screws also fit? it looks like it, but it might require cutting into the sides of the tremolo rout to make the tabs fit.
