I only heard this last week (thanks Satan) and it's definitely on the best of list.

Oh Cave are excellent. Didn't realise they had a new record out.
Latest Acid Cannibals has arrived as a christmas gift and it rules.

what is a good Derek Bailey album? the only playing i've ever heard of his, other than the totally restrained nylon-string on Gavin Bryars' "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet," was a duo Bailey/Pat Metheny disc which was the most un-musical thing i've ever heard. and i'm pretty tolerant of weird racket.

I like your thinking here (The Kee Avil EP is fab!) — I'll have to try check out less familiar stuff on your list.

a few favorites:

(AIDA is one of the aforementioned vinyl reissues)

(i absolutely love how Bailey obstinately does his *thing* despite the ludicrously funky rhythm section. it sounds so wrong it's right)

(this actually is a record of ballads, but played in his idiosyncratic style.)

Still need to get around to this but Transient was an amazing record and they're a great live band.

I loved Transient and this one only got a couple of spins. I found it was way more focused on riffing. It really didn’t click with me. There was another EP that was released recently and I quite liked that. I won’t write them off but this LP was a letdown. Maybe I need to give it a few more spins and re-evaluate? I quite like what they’re all about.

I like Bailey best when he’s collaborating. Topography of the Lungs with Bennink and Parker is the best thing to hear him on. The reissue is absolutely stellar. Second in line would be Derek Bailey and Dave Holland “Improvisations for Cello and Guitar” on ECM.
The albums with Han Bennink, Anthony Braxton and Jamie Muir are also killer and recently reissued. Other pics would be Derek Bailey & Company 6 & 7 (some great rips floating around, not been reissued recently) and The Music Improvisation Company first LP on ECM.
Solo Guitar has some cool moments but being totally honest I don’t love it the way I’ve clicked with his other works. It’s a little “reserved” in a lot of places and fellas, I like it HARSH.
Also “Nipples” with Peter Brotzmann is probably the highlight of both their discographies.

His LP with Rivers, Braxton and Altschul might be my favourite jazz record ever made.
