Because people expect stretch goals for crowdfunded projects.
Because the hardware is obviously almost final at this point so any big changes will not happen on this front.
I still lack sleep, but I stand by my comments

If you're going to develop the effects anyways and you're already putting some DSP shit into the machine why not max 'em out just to do it and make your thing better?
If you feel threatened by a stretch goal in a crowdfunding for a very cool but definitely not vital musical instrument then you should maybe reconsider some of your life choices ?
Software has value, he does not have to put everything in there, and this is probably code that can also be used for future products.
Insert rant about entitlement and definitely needing more sleep, too.
Agreed.

Yeah, software takes a lot of time. I really hope you can purchase the other effects if it doesn't hit 500 though. I'd jump on that.

I'm a little confused as to what this effect is doing. I guess it's like a pitch shifting delay or something, it almost sounds like some sort of Karplus-Strong mode? The demos are pretty vague. Still hyped, but would definitely like more info.

Don't know if this can support that.
This is going into full speculation, but I have no idea how the PCB is drawn to upload code to the MCU. I imagine that it's through some stupid header that requires some stupid adapter. Doing anything outside of that to allow you purchase and upload other effects into it would most likely require a PCB rework.

You would know more than me on that subject. Lets hope, then, that enough people started saving up when they heard the news about the crowdfunder and will be placing their orders soon.
I was hoping for the time stretch FX myself, but I placed my order before I even read the stretch goals, so it's all a bonus to me anyways.

That's exactly how I see it too. More effects would obviously be awesome, but I already ordered before even considering any of that

Isn't it like two variable short delays (like 20ms) crossfading to make use of pitch-shiftingesque Doppler effect? So delay A goes from 20ms to zero ms in a linear fashion and just before it gets down to its minimum delay time, the volume dips to zero and crossfades to delay B which then starts decreasing in delay time. Then it keeps going like that. It's pretty cool.
edit: because pictures are better than my explanation:

Is that documented somewhere and I missed it? I'd love to be able to dig through the docs if they were out. I'm also wondering if we'll get some information about the sequencer's optocouple/vactrol stuff and how it specifically impacts Mental. I guess I just enjoy stuff that's a little more in-depth and technical to help me imagine how I could use it.

No, Folktek hasn't documented it as far as I know. That just me trying to explain how the effect is produced.

Updates:
Hey everyone. Just a heads up that your voices have been heard regarding effects and I'm contemplating it. The 500 stretch goal for more effects was there for a reason, but I understand you want the effects, and I want you to have them. It's just not quite as simple as tossing them on there or charging you a few more $, so let me put some real thought into it and see what solution I can come up with.
Also, regarding voting on effects, while I do really like the idea, I have to see it as the instrument designer - meaning I need to find what I feel works best for the system.
To me an effect is more than just something that processes something else (I know...that's what it really is), it shapes the character of something and gives it a certain form, makes it feel a certain way, makes it sharp or soft, dark or light- as a much larger aspect of the instrument. In fact, ideally I feel as though you should never have to think of the effect - it should contribute to the greater whole in a way that can at least be unrecognized while doing it's job quite well.
So as the designer, I have to ask, what is the real character of Channel and in what way does an effect best serve the instrument as a whole. I've had the opportunity to sit with those possibilities and really play the instrument to see how it's best served and that's a decision that I feel needs to stay with me. Perhaps if we were all sitting in a room together I'd feel differently about it. I hope you understand.
will update asap. cheers!

Ruiner, you only need to buy about 50 more now:
In light of things, I'm updating the campaign. We reached nearly 300! That's great. Sadly the long stretch goal of 500 seems out of the question. So what we'd like to do is shorten that second stretch goal to 350. If we get to 350, we'll be adding another effect. So spread the word if you think it will help, and we'll do what we can on our end. Thanks for the support and all the best!
