Any ring mod with a carrier in could be used that way if I understand correctly? Would be tight to mic a kick drum and use it to modulate your ring mod.Bartimaeus wrote:Flange always seems to cheesy and 80's to me, but I think I need to pick up one with a resonance knob so I can do some pseudo-steel drum percussive stuff.
Chorus is often cheesy too, but some have a nice timbre that I do like for some subtle things.
Ring mod also escapes me. It's so distinctive an effect that it gets old fast. It would be cool if there was a ring mod pedal that you modulate by something other than a single stable oscillator. Something where you could ring modulate with a mic on your drummer or something would be pretty cool.
I also have a ZVex Fuzz Probe which sounds great for normal fuzz stuff, but which can be really hard to use in a non-dumb way when it's oscillating.
I love phase and trem, but as others have said, both can get old fast if you're playing on your own.
Do you have an effect that escapes you?

Yep, and that's a cool idea! It would probably be worthwhile to mod a ring mod pedal with an input, and connect it to a piezo mic on your drummers kick. Might need a preamp for the piezo, might not?BoatRich wrote:Any ring mod with a carrier in could be used that way if I understand correctly? If you want any low end you will want a preamp.

Does that even makes sense? I don't even know anymore.
Effect that escapes me. Tuner. Who needs that shit? I mean, what does it even do? Tune these nuts is what I say!

Definitely would for a piezo. I was thinking like a cheap harmonica mic with a 1/4 out would be sweet and sound really weirdBartimaeus wrote:Yep, and that's a cool idea! Some compression with something else (pitch, distortion, looper, delay) would probably work well with a kick into a rm. It's kinda too short of a sound to really be effective as a constant carrier. Balance might also be an issue that the compression and preamp will help with.
The frostwave blue ringer v2 does come with a mic preamp input.
If both signals are not present, there will be no sound...if balance if balanced (if not, there maybe some un-multiplied bleed). With a slow kick, even accounting for longer decay, there will be dead space where no signal will pass (unless the earlier work- arounds or others are included). If said drummer is rocking the blast beats, dont worry about it (but it will probably result in a too on time trem effect). On the other hand, short sharp blasts of shifted shred on the kick que might be kick ass for some rhythmic stuff.
Peizo'in' the whole set would probably have better results, but probably still require some level of compression/limiting/evening out. I think one of those mxr compressor limiter m87 with a harmonica kinda mic would work well...especially if you can get some feedback going in the space between kicks.
Phase may also come into account with certain blend settings (if you are passing carrier or guitar is acting as carrier or something...either way phase is still something to think about).
Also, thinking of another way, use a trigger to a bass synth with snappy envelopes (like that new korg volca announcement) might be more controllable and reject other signals from bleeding though if that's the goal....then you could sequence a carrier too or give long sustained prices for synchronized kinda pitch tracking (with a probably higher difficulty of rhythm skills).
If you can find something like this https://www.adafruit.com/products/1075 (don't know if that actual one will work) and wire it up the the exp jack on some ring mods, it would give the kick mallet control over the pitch of the ring mod (passive attenuation might help too so it isn't so sharp a change).

just prepare your signal and experiment.
