speaking of swells: Jacob's Solace was a great album. They had something of their own going on.

And even then, the name of the song is also the name of a nice venue in Glasgow, so they must be massive Mogwai fans. Or something. Yeah.

I played a show with them like ten years ago at least and they sounded like bargain bin Pelican. That song's way better.

Seen Jakob many times over the years and they always deliver. Lots of noise for just three guys.
The first time I saw ISIS, they opened and... well it was downhill from there.
Although, the americans all looked fucking exhausted and Aaron was desperately keen to get stoned, so maybe they'd just stepped off a twelve hour flight, aha.

Post-rock is a bit like death-metal for me, boring on record; you need to be in front of loud speakers, otherwise it's just silly bullshit.

Literally the best music writing there is IMO.

Toe were so good live.

Too bad the new album is sort of boring. I don't understand why you would restrain one of the best current drummers.

Erm. Where is this thread headed? I thought we were all post-ironic now and shit.

But because it is that, and because it came out in 1997, it has been largely aped to the point of no return. Still fucking gorgeous but definitely/probably/certainly overhyped as fuck to some inescapable degree. Also, while the band is tonally/melodically very similar now, they don't really do the Crescendo-core thing any more (and after having put the entire style in the ground with My Father, My King [see below], why would they?)

So basically your best bet is to check out Government Commissions, which are BBC recordings, or Special Moves, which is live. If you like those, you will like their albums proper.
You may have a point about MFMK, but I wish Mogwai would do that again, because later albums leave me cold (especially the electronic bits they keep putting in, and "Teenage Exorcists" is as generic as it gets:

Give me the band that made "Like Herod" over the thing Mogwai have become. It may not be "fresh" anymore, but thank Daizyujin that Godspeed You! Black Emperor are still doing what they do, even if the albums are getting shorter.

I think Government Commissions is the best Mogwai release, but am as big fan of everything they do, TBH

Y'all are nuts. Jakob is good stuff. I heard a little of their new stuff, seems to be the same ol' stuff they did before, but Solace is a great album.

Bargain Pelican? Jakob has more going on. I don't mean more in terms of instrumentation, parts, etc.

I heard Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, and 65 Days of Static before I knew about Mogwai, and my introduction to Mogwai was with Government Commissions, and a Sub Pop compilation that had "Stanley Kubrick" on it. Out of those bands mentioned, I listen to Do Make Say Think the most; their album "And Yet And Yet" is my make out album. NO LIE.
Post-rock is a genre that is heavily reliant on technique and songwriting, and most bands (EitS are BAD for this) overuse the loud quiet loud dynamics. I can listen to one or two songs in a row, but it gets boring fast unless I want to fuck. Mogwai I think figured out the formula and after "The Hawk is Howling" are trying new shit. I'll give credit for that. "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will" is great, but I stopped listening to them after.

Oh shit, I don't consider Russian Circles Post-Rock because they are too ballsy and awesome and shredding and Brian Cook is a babe and a Bear and my man crush on him is enormous.

Jakob are fantastic, one of my favourite post-rock bands ever.

never got what's so good about Pelican? Is it that they do mediocre post-metal better than anyone else? :idk:

also Jakob has something Pelican can only dream about... not only good drum grooves, but awesome drum grooves

No Pelican is so fucking rad. I know you're in the Eu's version of the third world or whatever but when Post-music was actually a vibrant thing Pelican were the first to do it with all the glory of metal sans the cheesy fucking accoutrements.

Jakob were bargain bin Pelican when I saw them play to five people at the tote like ten or twelve years ago. I'm sure they've got a lot more going on and are a lot better now.

Speaking of Pelican australasia was mental, they kinda lost me after that. That city of echoes album sounds like Mineral tuned down a fifth or something. Haven't checked out later stuff, heard it's better/heavier?
