ps3 has been the only kick head I've used for the past 4 years. I can imagine what a pain it might be. Very cool nonetheless.

I've long been tempted to try timpani heads and other marching heads. But in my heart I know the ps3 will win.
Also, studio b at electrical is the best sounding room.
And those extra long beaters are available at guitar center. So, it's not too big of a hassle.
Aaand, marching snares are the shit. I've used 14x10s a lot but really like this old 15x12. Unique for sure. And loud.

I think 32 is a bit big for a lot of practical concerns. Just moving it around can be a pain. Finding heads, a pain, and expensive. And while the near-field sound might sound OK, what makes it to the front of house will sound far different. I have played punchy 22s my whole life till recently when I got a kit with a 26" kick. I think too far beyond that and you start to get into diminishing returns.

the kit I got in payment for some work i'm doing had a 28in kick. I had it in my possession for a total of 15mins before I had sold the kit to someone in my unit. all looked neat but not neat enough for me to change out my current kit for it.

If I got a kit together, rather than a mix n match, I'd probably go with a deep ass 26. Marching 28s aren't as deep as I'd want ideally. But they doom so well.
I would totally rock a 32 if I found one as cheap as my 28. $50 college surplus score. You just have to beat the shit out of them and say goodbye to quick double hits and all that fancy footwork.

I recorded with a 26, and while that was definitely more of a challenge to move, I felt it brought out the best of my playing. Not sure what going over that would be like.

Why do you want a deeper kick? In my experience, anything more than 18 deep is just more work for little to no sonic difference. I remember playing a 26x22 before and feeling powerless, as well as confused as to how the owner got it through doors or into basements. I used to be into the long bass drum look, but have been turned off by anything deeper than a 16 since then..

I like the look of long kicks but that's all stops then. I did see one guy who actually made two super long cannon kicks by basically putting 2 normal 22x18 kicks together. he said when he miced his kick for recording they just opened it up and placed the mic inside and sealed it up again.

My kicks are 16 deep. 18 would probably be deep enough, just to warm up the tone without having to get thicker heads that would dampen the ring. I like my drums to sound wide open. But I would also be afraid of less attack. I think maybe just a higher quality 28x16 would do me just fine. The bigger the kick, the more power you can slam into the batter. All that leverage feels so nice.

I've used other big drums as a woofer for the kick. It adds a little resonance, but nothing worth taking to shows. This old 30" I've got has calfskin heads that ring out nicely but sound completely shitty alone. And it's over a century old.

That sounds cool. Something that maybe i'd like to play on but nothing I really want to seek out.

I've got a 22x20 kick that I use all the time for recording and with the right amount of stuffing (i use an old mexican style pancho/blanket and that's it) it sounds massive with the head tuned just right. If i'm not playing stuff (punk or thrash or whatever else) i tend to just leave the front head on and use a subkick on the batter head and that gets so much low end from the kick it's perfect. combine that with an AKGD112 or Shure Beta 52 mic in the drum? DAMN.
