There could be more to the story though, my upgrade just became available and my carrier has offered a new iPhone for $5 a month for the next 2 years no deposit... (Putting me in contract for another 2 years). I'm all for calling her out on her bullshit, but I won't be grabbing pitchforks blindly.

also, what's the level of your plan? Should someone almost homeless have that level of plan? was there a free option (often there is)?

I'm not putting you in that position, I'm pointing out the grim reality that she simply doesn't have money to invest, she is not making even basic survival needs according to her. Your situation may be different (you didn't answer about your plan level/costs. Are their lower service tiers?)

True, the internet is her marketplace and she already spends a huge amount of time anchored to a DESKTOP computer (that, she recently upgraded intending to use it for such things as video) and regularly uses skype, etc and the business isn't real-time nor mobile. The exciting benefit she mentioned was related to a game she wants to develop long term and even she now realizes the difficulty of realizing a practical income from that.

As you say, let's face reality, the purchase is wise insofar as she externalizes
costs (she has been asking for money to cover basic expenses for months and now business operating expenses while, simultaneously, purchasing luxury items.)
and
risks (let's face it, this is essentially the same business as the console which still has a sizable unpaid liability - Like the heart mother, she had sold quite a few consoles, after all.)
to other people.
