Damn. It looks like it is possible to assign each input to individual tracks and then to respective outputs. So it could be like having a 4 channel looper with 2 tracks per channel. Which fuck, hell yeah.
If I could midi foot control Rec/Overdub/Play/Fade or Stop per each of those theoretical channels, this is close to my ideal looping platform.

Best sounding use of a safety razor I've heard all year!
Gonna post this in the shaving thread!

Octatrack MK2 is insane.
Nice dive into the depths.

I have tried to read the manual multiple times. Can the Octatrack be used as a straight multitrack recorder and take microphone signals on the 1/4?

Thinking along these lines too, and eagerly awaiting an answer. If this can smoothly be used as a multitrack looper with 2 sets of stereo outs than I've just died and gone to gear lust heaven

yeah I guess it can. the main thing is the 80mb max RAM memory.
Standard rec time is 16sec.
I was watching an old Cuckoomusic video on demoing the pickup tracks (looping) and he upped to 40sec, allocating more memory on one track, I assume sacrificing memory on another unused track.

This is kinda what I hoped the OP-1 tape mode would be like. Maybe reconsidering the OP-1 slightly now as my production workstation?? That $500 price differential is definitely not making me question it *too* hard though.

Give yourself a week. That Eurocrack modular mind set is going to convince you that that $500 is nothing.

I hope a lot of people buy this and then find out they're not Knobs and the Octatrack way overwhelming. And then sell it to me.

OP1 is terrific for sketches or having a super portable all-in-one, but I don't think it's a great "workstation". Something like the Octatrack, whether original or MK2, would definitely take you further in terms of being a workstation.
8 audio/midi tracks instead of 4. Universal MIDI ports for controlling external gear. More audio inputs and outputs. Wide variety of effects, filters, and stuff like controllable beat repeat and resampling, etc...
The differences between the MK1 and MK2 are negligible IMO. You get a little more headroom with the inputs and a more efficient layout (more dedicated buttons, less menu diving) but the best feature is also available on MK1 via OS udpate: conditional trigs. The screen will be a little easier to read, but neither has (or will ever have) Overbridge. Workflow overall is identical outside of the shortcut buttons.

I feel like it's that way with most Elektron gear. I dove in with Rytm and Keys, and after owning and returning a Rytm and Keys for 2 weeks I got it again a year later and convinced myself it was worth the time - and it was. It's not the easiest piece of kit to learn, but once you get the sequencer and the file structure, everything else is cake.

Super silly question, but I'm kinda lazy today to make a search, sorry guys.
do you need a preamp to use it with guitar?
