I had good success with my DHA VT-twin but I had a different bass and board back then. I was using a Warwick Corvette STD with a ACG EQ-02 preamp. Lots of big sounds but not too hot. What bass are you using? A G&L or MusicMan may be too hot.
I have no experience with a Rusty Box. I also don't give a shit if a show is backlined anymore, I have brought my rig to shows anyways. I am probably going to bring my own mic to shows anyways because I hate being DIed (I bought an amp without a DI, I thought that was a bonus for me).
Anyways, I think maybe something like 3 Leaf Audio Enabler may be a good idea. It seems like a good utilitarian pedal for someone in your situation.
p.s. FUCK COMPRESSORS

The Rusty Box was cool but SOOOOOOOOOOOO trebly and articulate. Which is a good thing. But my Status is kinda trebly and very articulate. So the combo was a bit much. But if I had a different bass, I'd be all over that mug.

The entire rig is like a car. Your bass is the make/model. The amp/cab(s) would be the tires you put on it. And the pedals would be all of the options (color, sports edition, DVD player, leather seats, etc.). A lot of people like to do the tone shaping with pedals. And that's cool. I'm the type of person that likes to take a shit car and dress it up all nice like. It's a thing. But those people need to understand that that's what they're doing. No amount of options will turn a 15 year old Ford Taurus into a brand new Dodge Avenger and no amount of pedals can get a beautiful hifi sound from a rink a dink passive bass and a bottom line amp/cab.
You generally start by getting the make/model car you want, and that's where you should start with bass. But don't overreach to the point where you can't match it with a amp/cab that fits it. That's like buying a Ferrari and asking the guy at WalMart to just put the cheapest shit on them......or like getting skinny ass speed tires on your offroad vehicle.
Anyways, that was long winded and I know it's not exactly what you were looking for, but the way I approach it is that the clean sound I'm looking for needs to be had from my bass mainly and a little bit from my amp and any other sound I want is where I look to my pedals.
I completely agree with you on this man. I think my search is for a solution when the amp selection is out of my control and I lose a great deal of my core clarity and presence. I use a Ben Lindsey 57P - it's the best bass I've ever owned. It's passive and old school but has a huge amount of clarity and growl. Pedals for me are my channels. I use each one to change dynamics. I think it's why I dig pedals so much - you can change the entire feel of a song with them. So here I am with a killer bass, and a board I love....and some venue tells me backline amps - no exceptions. I guess what I need is a pedal that grabs me some character and tone back. It's already there in my bass and board - this pedal is sort of a way to hammer it through a bad amp. Sounds like a rusty the more I talk about it

It has to be a Rusty. You guys rock for the following reasons -
1. Nobody mentioned Sansamp fucking VT.
2. The fuck compressors comment.
3. The best description of Darkglass I've heard without TB style masturbation. I'll listen to more demos.
Thanks!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......toughy. I've never run into the mandatory backline issue so I didn't even think about it.
So the biggest issue is that NO MATTER WHAT bass or pedals you have, that backline is going to color your sound. Nothing will stop that. It's like taking a back and then letting someone throw shit on you. Doesn't matter what soap you used during the bath, someone just threw shit all over you. So yeah.....are these backlines usually mic'd or DIed? If it's DIed, you're on the right track. A good preamp pedal with DI on it and you're golden....and then you're 10 steps beyond me and this post doesn't help at all it's more of an "oh, I understand now" thing. All you have to do is turn the backline amp down and just use the monitors.....or use the backline as the monitor and walk out in the audience, understanding that what you hear on stage will suck and what the audience hears will be more like what you hear at rehearsal. If they mic it....then....shit.....you're boned.
I would also recommend getting a fEARful cab built (I understand shipping over there would be a BITCH but a good carpenter and electrician could do it for cheap) since those cabs are pretty much colorless. So it would keep your sound post pedals pretty much intact.
