I'm going to give it a few days, but if nothing sells that I have listed, I'm going to try some Payson Flats on my Dingwall. The problem really is a want a passive Dingwall now. The electronics are just too hot for some of my effects anyway.

Ben, I'm amazed at how much you've spent on rehouses! LOL! Dan does good work, but many you crazy!!!! hahaha Awesome.

Oh and I'm for the Ben sex doll too. Rawr. ;)

What about just putting a thingy behind your dinger but in front of your doobles to lessen the signal? But it could be the type of thinger that when bypassed keeps it hot just going straight into your dowhaly.....then you get sexy clean toanz AND easier to play with affected toanz. Best of both Worlds. And the thingy would probably be tiny and cheap.

Need some tone shaping advice guys.

Bought a DHA VT1EQ in my eternal hunt for a pedalboard that doesn't give a shit about the amp it runs through. In putting it at the end of my chain, it just compresses the hell out of my dirt pedals. My EBS Valvedrive (which is a stupidly underrated pedal), Rat Tail and TAFM all just shrunk in output and I quickly developed some hate for the DHA. It's a great pedal in isolation but I need something that can be an EQ/preamp and not screw my other pedals.

I'm torn now. Im half thinking I'll just get a really great tone shaping pedal - maybe something does DI as well and just work it that way. Tempted to go back to a Rusty Box because its killer and i never tried it at the end of my pedal chain. Or maybe something like a B7k. The Darkglass stuff sounds kind of trebley to me in demos though? Everyone digs it - why do I keep thinking it sounds like a Tubescreamer in demos???? Not sure what the answer is. Can't afford a Verellen or the space it needs. The DHA has failed. I know the Rusty cuts it. Is there anything else that comes close?

Other option is to break up components. Started listening to compression pedals for the first time ever this week. Maybe adding a 3leaf compressor and something like a Barber Linden gives me some tools to override a shitty amp? Thoughts?

The way I view it:

The entire rig is like a car. Your bass is the make/model. The amp/cab(s) would be the tires you put on it. And the pedals would be all of the options (color, sports edition, DVD player, leather seats, etc.). A lot of people like to do the tone shaping with pedals. And that's cool. I'm the type of person that likes to take a shit car and dress it up all nice like. It's a thing. But those people need to understand that that's what they're doing. No amount of options will turn a 15 year old Ford Taurus into a brand new Dodge Avenger and no amount of pedals can get a beautiful hifi sound from a rink a dink passive bass and a bottom line amp/cab.

You generally start by getting the make/model car you want, and that's where you should start with bass. But don't overreach to the point where you can't match it with a amp/cab that fits it. That's like buying a Ferrari and asking the guy at WalMart to just put the cheapest shit on them......or like getting skinny ass speed tires on your offroad vehicle.

Anyways, that was long winded and I know it's not exactly what you were looking for, but the way I approach it is that the clean sound I'm looking for needs to be had from my bass mainly and a little bit from my amp and any other sound I want is where I look to my pedals.

yah. i think a good bass -> good preamp -> power -> good sized quality speakers is the easiest base to start from, then mix in pedals. for me Dingwall -> Rust Box -> power amp -> Aguilar GS 12's just sits exactly where i want my clean tone. a smidge dirty clean, but i don't really enjoy pristine toanz.

i dunno. to me Tubescreamers always sounded low end rapey on bass. and the B3k is just EXACTLY what i hear for OD on bass in my head. plus, TS's always make me think of Star Scream and that traitorous plane bastard's voice was so grating and shrill. made me want to punch kittens.

but i think the Rusty handles every effect i've thrown at it very.... i dunno... true? Rusty sounds like Rusty, but at the end of the chain as a preamp doesn't interfere with wiggly stuff being run into it. 's the fat kid on the playground that brought enough Skittles to share with everybody.
