GOD DAMNIT. RW was like a second father to me, in a way. I grew up watching all his films and he was such a funny, playful and warm soul. I was really sad when he died. So funny.

Cause there is no solution. The dictators - as brutal as they were - kept the Islamisits at bay. Those many will keep trying to do what their good book says.
The dictators kept the Islamists misdirected and used them as muscle against leftists, liberals and westernizing moderates threatening exclusive regime power. (Iran under the Shah was a bit exceptional on this front in going after extremist clerics as well as these others. Lesson learned. Saudi Arabia just put their extremist clerics on what is effectively payroll.) CIA and State Dept. signed off back in the day because the dictators would be their dictators instead of the Soviets'. Religiosity and religious identity became the exclusive acceptable valve to be unhappy with the state of life in those countries. Add foreign infidels as the real enemy, wash, rinse, repeat.

Okay, honestly, my simplification works better for some places than others, like Saudi Arabia more than Egypt (just ask the Muslim Brotherhood), but keeping Soviets at bay, not Isalamists, is the historic reason the U.S. backed midde east dictators.

Yeah, one threat disappears and another emerges.

Just figured it out.
Trump pays douchebags to bomb places OS, reinforcing his rhetoric of fear, getting him elected as leader of a paranoid state....
....something something, build the wall...
.....make them pay...pay off failed development projects....start new developments like the wall, turn it into a tourist destination...
....uhm....oh yeah, Mandela effect, Trump was Drumpf....quantum shift.....
Drumpf Effect.

I know I shouldn't make light of these things but we live in a world of idiocy and it is becoming unbearable.
Apologies for my severe levels of insensitivity.
Gonna show myself out for being an asshole.

and the way he's doing things, Putin could be the one to restore the balance.

Cold War 2: Digital Boogaloo (I know the first Cold War had a warmer, more "natural" sound :whateva: )

Not surprising, the first Cold War was analog.

It was certainly....

...solid state.

Well, Ted Cruz is dead. Career-wise.

His whole career has been a wrecking ball anyway.

Republicans should have had somebody bogging down Trump with petty bitchfights from day one. That's the only way to beat him. The only problem is that someone else has to commit to his level and go down with him.

In pro wrestling, back when there was a travelling world champion, the champ traveled with his policeman. The policeman was a legit shooter, a trusted confidante, and always had your back. The policeman would vet opponents, prevent double crosses, and make sure the champ kept his belt. Dory Funk Jr. had Terry, Ric Flair had Arn Anderson. The Republicans, if they had taken Trump seriously, should have had an heir apparent and given him a policeman. The heir is inspirational and stays above the muck, the policeman tears into Trump at every opportunity. Instead, they let Trump run this insane post-modern campaign and run roughshod over the whole process.

Chucky, that was actually a perfect analogy for this whole fiasco.
And fuck yes, they should have done that.

It would have been super easy with either Rubio or Bush in the heir position and Christy or Cruz as a policeman. Christy was especially suited to the role: witty, unambitious, and willing to get dirty. A Rubio/Christy or Paul Ryan/Christy team would have ended this Trump thing by the third debate.

It's all moot for me, anyways. I'm basically a Trotskyite.
