Never tried a Status, and probably never will. Dingwall for the wins though Bruce. DINGWALL FRETLESS BASS FOR THE WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though. I want a fucking fretless Dingwall. HARD.
Maybe I should put flats on my Dinger (hehe Dinger) and pretend.

Just read the first line of the OP and that's all I needed to know.
This isn't a real request for anyone to decide for him which bass to buy,...it's just a thinly veiled pretext to brag about dropping $3K on a instrument.

Fucking this.
If I had three grand to drop on a bass, I'd just save for another 6 months and get a Wal.
And no offense to anyone, but I always found Wishbasses ugly. Just not my thing.
Oh ... and a fretless Dingwall? Whoa ... like, how could you keep the fanned fret positions without frets. How would you ... wait ... WHAT?????

I fail to see the point of a 4 string Ding

i'd never seen the Wishbass until the photo above, and i think it's hideous. it's the equivalent of the design of the Prius and the Honda Insight, made to say "LOOK HOW AFFLUENT AND COOL I AM." bleah.

Yeah,...Wishbasses are worth about $300 (to me at least; I didn't do any real research).
I think there may be a community of bassists that buy these things and invest effort into making them playable and attractive. Redoing the original finish. Whittling away on the neck. Rewiring the electronics.
I don't mind some of the shapes but the finishes are lack luster and the whole thing is just half assed (which admittedly,...probably gives them their charm in a Hatfield and McCoy kinda way). They are hard to take seriously,...but if Deltz is all about it; he should go for it.
No truss rod in the neck. Having never played one I do imagine that the necks on these are the same profile as half a baseball bat.
EDIT: I lied; I mind all the shapes.

This. I want a five for the tight B.

The 2 Wishbasses are priced at $300, I bet I could get one for $250. These are kind of totally the opposite of affluent Dubkitty. A dude builds these in his shed.
The necks are pretty big and the finish is crappy. I just want a cheap fretless, and these are unique. Plus I like messing with stuff, I would end up refinishing.
Regarding the fretless Dinger, same deal as fretted, with practice it could be natural. I would want it lined though. Fretless Dingers are rare. A 4 string would have even string tension.

I guess what I'm saying with Wishbass; it's hard for me to see anything in those other than a fella with a little bit of talent for whittling but no real engineering capacity; or design skill, sitting in his holler shop trying to carve out a life for himself. It's cool and kudos to him for being able to do that. I'm willing to bet that the high dollar boutique luthiers would be embarrassed putting instruments like the Wishbasses into the world.
Electric Basses
We want to make you the best sounding Fretless Electric Bass in the world for about what you would pay for an entry level imported bass. How can we do this? It's simple; we use honest woods and honest sweat and make an honest profit. We sell direct to you, and eliminate the 100% markup that music stores charge. Therefore, a $400 bass costs you $400, and not $800. We have some of the most respected bassists in the world playing Wishbasses, although we do not have any paid endorsers.
Translation: $400 is about all my basses are worth.
We use traditional materials and methods, but are able to take advantage of the most modern technology to save you money, and most importantly, make it easier for you to get your music from your brain to the audience's ears.
Translation: We have a rudimentary knowledge of luthiery and aren't tooled up to do anything better than a bass worth $400
Our basses are designed to maximize the acoustic coupling between the strings and the neck/body wood. This produces a fine woody tone and lots of sustain. Our basses minimize the metal and electronics in between your hands and the amplifier, letting you control your tones instinctively, instantly, organicly.
Translation: We don't have any real design skills so we are gonna make up an industry term (acoustic coupling?) and throw some buzz words at you to make it look like we know what we are talking about.
The Fretless bass is not just an electric bass guitar with no frets, it is a different instrument.
Translation: We aren't tooled up to slot and fret instruments and the investment is too great and it's just easier to build a fretless bass
Our ergonomics and tone are unequaled in the industy[sic].
Site your references/subjective opinion.
We make the most comfortable bass in the world. We have had many customers tell us that they can play much longer without stress and strain than they ever have been able to do before.
Translation: Lot's of people blow smoke up our asses cause they don't want us to feel bad.

http://www.wishbass.com/ I'm pretty sure that website has remained unchanged for the past 12 years. This isn't meant to be an attack; just poking a little anonymous fun.
Not gonna lie. Wishbasses have their voice; and they have their place; in a very niche and kitsch market. I have absolutely no issue with that; and I'd love to have a go with a wishbass,...but I'm not gonna actually buy one; with money.
Deltz is right on the money. $250 for a unique Fretless. I'd rather that Squier that Fooman is after,...but whatevs,...to each his own.
A thought just popped into my head,....I wonder if Wishnevky could make me an EUB.

I'm sure he can make a EUB.. He has actually made real DBs.... whether or not it will be playable...
As a professional woodworker stuff like wish kind'a offends me... I can respect the hobbyist who mangles stuff up but to run a busyness based on crap.

Yeah; the little bit of time I put in with Darrin (for better or worse) the one thing I did glean from him was his unwavering desire to put out the best product he could. To a fault; not letting even the most minute mistake pass muster. The average player might not see one tiny mistake,...but another luthier would. With his name on the instrument; from an artistic, engineering and reputation standpoint; that was unacceptable to Darrin.
Of course the guy that's put his deposit down and has been waiting ten years just wants his friggen bass already (speaking of reputation). Call Darrin what you will (con-man, thief, flake, whatever) his basses ARE works of art.

So would a set of CKS Balanced tension strings for a fraction of the cost.
Which brings me to the question; where does one source strings for fanned fret basses? Not knowing a damned thing about fanned fret instruments,...seems like you'd need some pretty specific string lengths.
If it were up to me between a Status and Dingwall; I think I'd go Status. For 3Grand; I'd get a Jap Fender and invest the rest in Amplification and cabs.

Personally.. I find the fanned fret thing interesting but.. and the 35-37" B thing interesting but... I find the idea of a instrument like the NS EUB on a strap a lot more interesting....
