dubkitty wrote:i don't really like basses with low B strings. in my experience those really low notes just don't reproduce well in a room--even when a band has a state-of-the-art system like the one the Grateful Dead used to run when Phil Lesh was campaigning his 5-strings with the Dead in the late 80s/90s--and tend to turn to audio mush and interfere with the low frequencies of the drums. it's notable in this context how few orchestral instruments play that low. i think they CAN work, but i think it requires a major rethink of how to voice an instrumental ensemble, with the drums retuned and the guitars/other instruments playing differently in order to yield the sub-bass to the bassist. that would be cool, but to me playing a low C under a power chord just sounds clotted and harmonically unpleasant.
i'm also sick and tired of oscillating fuzz.
and i hate myself and want to die. and can't even make it into a catchy song like Kurt Cobain.
Do you think Jeff Caxide's tone is muddy or mushy?

i think you're talking about on record. i specifically said "in a room," which is to say "live." notes below the low D do not reproduce well in a live environment.

well, i can't address that, since i've never seen any of his bands. but at this point i think we're crossing over into arguing personal preference. i can keep on listing reasons why i don't care for the low B, and you can keep on counter-arguing, but nobody's going to change their mind.

I've never thought of Torche as muddy when I saw them live. Thunderous and filled with mids, yes. Even in bomb tuning.

I'm trying to post as much as I can to get to 666 and then I'll log off forever.
I did that on another forum once but one of my posts got deleted around the same time that I lost my password AND email address to login.
665 = NOT VERY FUNNY

So I blew up my drummer's bathroom last night. Not figuratively, literally. I took a big shit and the terlit overflowed, so I was cleaning up my own poop for a few minutes there. I felt bad, but I got most of it, and then he said "well, thanks for cleaning it up, but you'll have to tell my wife what you did." So as I was leaving she came home, and I said "I blew up your bathroom," and her response was "well... I did feed you curry."
So I guess we're cool.
