I think they mean that he would avoid other people who were eating meat as well.

I think if all the animals were dead, it wouldn't take long for humans to somehow rationalize eating people. Like, prisons would become slaughterhouses, or we'd eat aborted fetuses, or something.

And insects would become way more popular as food.
