Everyone has been all over sport anime lately.

Where were you guys when Captain Tsubasa first aired? Probably in some womb somewhere, noobs.

I mean, if you count racing as a sport I was hella into initial D back in the day.

Just finished Bakemonogatari a couple of days ago, was a lot better than I expected. Still hate fanservice though.

You'll love Nisemonogatari then.

I'm scared to start it now.
But it reminded me of my two favorite anime ever: Serial Experimenta: Lain and Revolutionary Girl Utena. Which are now considered ancient.

Utena hasn't aged too well IMO but Lain will (hopefully) be considered relevant for all eternity (and still has the best haircut to date) so

Hey, I started watching Utena this week. I like it, despite them playing the same damn song everytime she enters the duel arena.
Serial Experiments: Lain is great too. Not that old, though?
Oh, and backwards, I watched the first season of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei. Funny stuff. Are the other seasons equally good?

SE:L is almost 20 years old. It's just still relevant, which only makes it scarier. It's amazing how much it predicted.
The problem with utena is the whole Seinfeld Is Not Funny trope. It got so cannibalized by other shows that it lost its luster. It's still a good watch. I'm happy that Steven Universe gave utena a good defibrillation in the eyes of the Internet.

I might be a little drunk, but I'm having trouble understanding your second paragraph. Seinfeld is pretty funny?

The humour in Utena is good to, well, at least it entertains me. Yep, I'm definitely a little drunk.

haha, the duel arena sequences are pretty painful i think, it's undeniably important but i can tell i would have liked it significantly better if i'd watched it when it came out.
Utena was actually '97 and Lain was '98 so they're similarly old but Utena certainly feels older.
Honestly Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei degrades in quality with each season but even by the end it's still better than almost every other comedy out there, i think.
Probably my favourite comedy anime but i kind of consider the first season separately to the rest because it's so great. Definitely watch the rest though just don't expect the same quality.
Then watch Arakawa Under the Bridge!

The "Seinfeld is not funny" trope is when a show does a lot of great new things that later generations of shows copy mercilessly, so when somebody goes and watches the first show, all they see are now overused jokes and such. A lot of younger people don't care much about Seinfeld because every comedy show after took a lot from it.

Backwards: I do like the feel of older anime, though. Space operas from the eighties, weird stuff from the nineties... good stuff.
Thanks for the info, I'll check out the other seasons sometime. Trying to only watch one series at a time. Arakawa is up next, your suggestions have always been good.
Inconuucl: Oh yeah, that thing. Well, I haven't watched a lot of magical girl stuff, so haven't really noticed.

Yeah i really like certain older stuff but am definitely a lot pickier about getting into it, being an ADHD-riddled millenial and all. I'm crazy about all those weird one-off 90s cyberpunk OVAs though.
My favourite from the eighties is a film called Tenshi no Tamago (Angel's Egg) which i would highly recommend, it's a largely underappreciated masterpiece IMO. About 70mins long and almost no dialogue.

Oh yeah, Angel's Egg is glorious. That's Mamoru Oshii (GitS-guy), isn't it?
Stuff like Robot Carnival, Memories and Neo-Tokyo is also pretty rad.
