Love these guys. wish I could use them more.

The top is a 70s OR80 non-master volume and the bottom is a 90s reissue OR120 w/ master volume.

are these yours?
how would you honestly compare the 70's vs the 90's?

I've had an AD140 and a 90's OD120, the latter had a much nicer & richer tone, enough to make me sell the AD.
I've never tried a vintage Orange and wonder if would equally blow away my 90's models.
I also have a 90's OTR120

Does the 70s one blow the 90s away? no. is it better? i think so.

However, i did replace the transformers in the 90s one with transformers from Mercury Magnetics and that made a pretty substantial difference from stock. Brought it MUCH closer to the 70s one.

they are both GREAT amps in my opinion.

is one of yours an "OTR" and one an "OVERDRIVE"? do you notice difference between those two?

yeah, OTR & Overdrive. both 120watts.
the OTR has a richer clean tone and overdrives with a smoother quality then the Overdrive.
the Overdrive goes to fuzz too quickly.
both ridiculously ballsy and fullrange, but the OTR just revs up with more shine and midrange. (like a superbass vs an 800)
I actually like the OTR so much that I had the Overdrive modified to match the OTR.
they definitely match in tone now (true stereo rig for recording & backup for live).

hmmm, mercury magnets... 600$ of trannies ... might as well get a whole new amp built. (X2 if i do both amps)
i'd really like to AB a vintage one. my wallet does not want me to AB one, haha.

I only ended up replacing them in the 90s one because the stock output transformer died on me and just figured replace both of them while the amp was in pieces. Otherwise I wouldn't have done it. (and 10 years ago their transformers were a lot cheaper. i think it was only $175-$200 a transformer back then)

This makes me want to try a regular or. I have an or80 overdrive modded to 120 specs. I love it to death, but, now I'm intrigued.

Now fully functional. Took off the cheap plastic connections on the reverb tank and soldered them. Retubed with NOS Mullard 12AT7, Sylvania long-plate 12AX7, and Raytheon 12AT7.

Took away all the harsh treble, very smooth and shimmery now. :yay:

awesome. the newer fenders really have a lot of potential. they are like 90% there, with some little mods here and there they can really come to life and hang with many boutique amps. for the money, you can't really trash talk blues deville, blues jr., etc. especially for how cheap you can pick one up used. worth every penny.

Yeah, you can't beat the price imo, sounds as good clean as any $1,000 + amp I've played.

I didn't actually expect a 90s usa fender to use the cheap plastic connections though, not that big of a deal because it was only the verb tank but whatever.

What's going on with your connections? What cabs are connected to what heads? That rig just screams "Call the police honey, I can't take it anymore". :thumb:

It went JCM->2X15 and Sunn into the rest. And, that was a good description.
