I’m conflicted about what to do. There’s an effect my victim has never talked about, even though it falls broadly into a category of effects that they’ve had on their board for years. It’s also completely unlike anything they’ve used before. So, I’m conflicted about whether I should get them a safe choice, or this thing they will either hate or love?

I think the “let’s try and see if this works for you” strategy is quite valid. Applying your thoughts, experience, and ears to someone else’s gear thing has the potential to be revelatory. Has advantages if the mark doesn’t keep pedge and/or doesn’t give any good indication of what their inventory is. Maybe don’t get the unique personalized etch job on the gamble pedal and understand it may not be forever for them. (Though I’ve kept every Satan gift, including two one-off etched and those are super rad.)

I think bold takes are good if you think it falls within stuff they would probably like? And sometimes you get stuff for secret Santa that you don't love or don't love forever. It's still nice that someone tried and got you something interesting

I'd say go for it. New experiences are fun, and I find that, ironically, the "safe" choices might be the easiest flips if they do something your mark already has covered.
