Yeah definitely. That said, I still prefer reading about a lot of seminal records to actually listening to them.

What album should I listen to such that I too can endorse Mogwai ruling? I know shit all about post rock. Of all the non-metal bands mentioned here I've only listened to Godspeed.

Young Team is their BLOGGER ENDORSED GENRE DEFINING MASTERPIECE

But because it is that, and because it came out in 1997, it has been largely aped to the point of no return. Still fucking gorgeous but definitely/probably/certainly overhyped as fuck to some inescapable degree. Also, while the band is tonally/melodically very similar now, they don't really do the Crescendo-core thing any more (and after having put the entire style in the ground with My Father, My King [see below], why would they?)

So basically your best bet is to check out Government Commissions, which are BBC recordings, or Special Moves, which is live. If you like those, you will like their albums proper.
This is their "hit":

Also if you don't like them I'm going to have to reevaluate our internet friendship because this is irreconcilable differences.

maybe in a country where you had actual college stations and stuff. Over here it was older friends, becoming friends with record shop people, zines and reading the thanks lists in liner notes of bands you already liked.

Ditto. They closed with My Father My King!

This is fair. A lot of relatively talentless bands led extremely interesting lives. For example, I'm willing to wager that only a fraction of people who have read The Dirt are actually Mötley Crüe fans. (I'm not making a comment on the quality of Mötley Crüe here. Just an example.)
