Funny story about Hex- before I had my license and had my permit, I was driving with my dad from Virginia to Maryland and he said I could put whatever I wanted on in the truck since I was driving. So I chose Hex. Within 15 minutes he was DEAD ASLEEP. After a while I nudged him to wake him up and he said WHY WOULD YOU PUT THAT ON IT MAKES ME SO TIRED. lahsdfkahsdfkajfhhahahah

Second funny story about Hex. Coaxed my dad to see Earth with me right before Bees came out and they were touring with Pelican and using all of Pelican's gear (which, at the time, was a LOT). I've never been more terrified of a clean guitar signal in my life. At one point during one of the songs from Hex I thought I was nearly going to shit myself.

^^^ Earth + Pelican? ALL OF MY YES. That's as good as that Earth + Eagle Twin tour that I stupidly missed.

This guys is going to single-handedly make me buy a Drone Commander and especially a Ravish Sitar (I think it'll sound cool with my Moog SubPhatty too). I've also been thinking about the EHX Iron Lung. I can't find any good videos of it running into a lot of heavy effects. Most seem to run it pretty straight after it. Some vocoding drone might be cool though.

That must have been beyond epic. I saw Earth on tour last year for the whole Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light thing and it was epic as fuck. Dylan played out of what appeared to be a measly Fender tube combo (like 15W or less) and despite being one of the quietest shows I've been too, it was still fucking sick. Saw Pelican a couple weeks back too; their gear was somewhat stripped back from what I expected. The earth literally sank with their heaviness.

I used to like Pelican but I just don't seem to enjoy much anymore, even the older stuff. Newer Earth doesn't have the meditative, drone qualities of the original stuff and it just doesn't flow smoothly enough to keep me interested. It's in that awkward middle ground where it isn't droney enough to just vibe out to and is yet too droney to be songish.

Very cool. So many Oakland bands....must be something in the water. I've always loved that good drone is as much in the listeners head as it is in the air. What I mean by that is that the listener often finds themselves focusing and even hearing on a mixture of sounds that are there and some that aren't. It's also a music that lends itself to playing so loud the air and walls become alive psychoacoustics play a unique role for everyone in the room depending on where they are. It's also great music to meditate too.

I miss this thread. My improvised drone, doom, ambient, noise project seems to have added a very good drummer. Hopefully we'll have things up on Bandcamp soon. There's some difficulty getting the cello to mix well everything without being muddy.

I've been doing a lot more droning lately. I picked up a Ditto anh have been making drone loops by just layering and layering things. And once I feel a drone loop is complete, I just let it keep looping for a period of time, 5 to 30+ mins. The loop sinks in after awhile and trances me out, its very calming and meditative. I'm starting to record snippets of the finished drones, I think I need to make them longer so the listener can get the trancy thingy going too.

http://soundcloud.com/mcmuench/sets/frequency-therapy

And the thing is Ive been droning at very low volume, like 2am droning with sleeping parents upstairs volume, with my Correct Sounds Customs Eclipse pre amp with all the dirt and the Ditto for looping,no other effects into an old acoustic lead sled power amp to desired volume, into a single 15", so the amp is puting out >100watts. So I've definitely learned droning doesn't need the wall of amps, but Im going to need to drone down at my space one of these nights, for some frequency therapy, because I'm sure itll be better LOUD.

I've been desiring to turn a bass into some kind of drone machine. But tuning (and money) are keeping me from moving on it. Something in low A though...

AAAaa
AAEEc
AEaea
GGAEE

There are so many possibilities.
But what I thought could be pretty cool is forcing myself to only "play" the top two-three strings and move a capo around on the neck to adjust the key I'm playing in.
Could make for some huge sounds....
Great business with::: space6oy, SpaceFlunky, iamthesnow, DannDubbleEwe, leaves turn, Jero, Gigahearts_FX, PumpkinPieces, sergiomunoz74

Great thread. Lots of good info. It's way more than some robes and candles and shit. Aiden Baker is the living proof of this. I've seen Nadja a bunch before he moved to Germany and it's always killer, dude just uses the PA and it's heavier than being run over by a tank.

Our friend Phantasmagorovich gives some great advice. I am a huge fan of that Owwl record on Utech.

I think the Nadja/Fear Falls Burning record is the most amazing blueprint for heavy ambient/drone. That's just such a mesmerizing album.
