another thing i failed to mention that made
Only Money so powerful was the "real emotion," to quote the lyric below, at the heart of the album, the genuine heartbreak and grief, the need and loss, that lay behind the scathing lyric of "Mom & Dad":
ever take a minute just to show some real emotion
in between the moisture cream and velvet facial lotion
ever tell your kids you're glad that they can think?
ever say you loved them? ever let them watch you drink?
ever wonder why your daughter looks so sad?
it's such a drag to have to love a plastic Mom and Dad
Mama, Mama
your child was killed in the park today
shot by the cops as she quietly lay
safe by the side of the creeps she knew
they killed her, too
there was a whole generation's worth of cruel misunderstanding and tears in that forty seconds of music.

Animals by Pink Floyd and fuckin' Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice by Deathspell Omega.
Many others, but those two were huge in terms of self-fuckedness.

Me too!

Vitalogy fucked me twice. When it first came out it made me absolutely fucking loathe Pearl Jam, after having once been a fan. In fact Ten was quite impressioning on my impressionable young mind at the time. But man. Vitalogy was such a massive disappointment to me that I ignored them for a decade before coming 'round full circle and loving them once again, thanks to the closing credits of Big Fish. That's about when I went back and realized that Vitalogy is their most ambitious album, and something very important in the whole Grand Scheme Of Things aspect as well. Not my favoUrite album by them, but I do appreciate it on a different level than all the others.

Rethinking this thread, & while that Hella album did open my ears more than anything else, there were some other albums in my past that had a strong emotional impact on me/broadened my horizons as well.

And then there was this:

oh jeez bro. yes.

I need to post several, because fucking my mind is always a gradual process for me...
It hurts to admit it, but in 7th grade, this album is what made me start actively listening to music. I saw the video for "In the End" by accident one time and I was like " HOW IS THIS EVEN REAL?!"

Then, at age 14, these:

At 16, these:

At 18, this album introduced me to the shady underbelly of emo and post-hardcore and estranged me from all my punk friends:

At 20, I became even less punk:

Fuck, I don't even know anymore man. I was just listening to Bon Iver. My 16 year old self would hate me.

I listened to Dystopia for the first time ever last night and afterward it felt like I was drained of all my precious bodily fluids. Fucked indeed.

If the albums in my first post fucked me for life, then these sort of provide the inspirational framework for what I'm doing now:
Guided By Voices-Alien Lanes
Jeff Buckley-Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk
Tyrannosaurus Rex- A Beard of Stars
The Complete Blind Willie McTell
Sebadoh- Bakesale
Dinosaur Jr. You're Livin' Allover Me
Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath-Sabotage

Your not alone
This was probably the first non-pop CD I owned, followed shortly after by:
