Yes, but also no. Lynch has made a mediocre work (and himself has admitted it too), I don't think Jodorowsky would have done something worse.

I liked Lynch's Dune better than the book, I think it is the ONLY movie I liked better than the book. It's one of my favorite movies. :idk:

I dunno if this is controversial, but Dune is a weird book... given that it's about a prophecy coming to pass, it's, like, eighty percent people talking about what's going to happen, and then that thing happening.

What's not to like about a book with like 20 pages of definitions, before the actual story?

"grabs his Dune copy before heading to work"

The Dune movie is OK, not as terrible as certain corners of the internet would have you believe.

It's essentially an unfilmable book though so I think anyone would have a tough time.

The Dune series (when Frank was still writing it, not the son's shitshow) was/is the most ambitious science fiction story ever told.

Lynch was in the running to direct Return of the Jedi around this time and chose to do Dune instead. I'm not a Star Wars fan, but I would pay money to see that.

I think Lynch's Dune is more palatable to Lynch fans than Frank Herbert fans. It's certainly a flawed movie, but I think another director would have made a equally flawed and possibly less interesting movie. Jodorowsky couldn't have made a good and faithful Dune movie either, but he would have done something interesting too.

Going to reread "Insurance Adjusters of Dune" now to see if it's still as bad as I remember...

Agreed but I put it at the same level of Asimov Fundation series. :thumb:

Fahrenheit 451. That film is the best favor anyone ever did for Ray Bradbury, who had great storylines but was an atrocious prose stylist in that sort of dreadful post-Hemingway Midwestern deadpan voice.

I really rate the first few Foundation books but towards the end I felt it all got a little far fetched. But then I apparantly had no problem with the 1,000 year Worm-Man Space-Reich so it just goes to show how subjective it all is.

But in a totalitarian world where books are destroyed, wouldn't flowery prose seem out of place? :?:
Seriously though, Bradbury had what I've always thought of as quite a dry, to the point style of writing but as you say the storylines always made up for it.

some of his short stories are quite good, though. i think he was more able to capture a tone other than his typical. there's a really lovely little one about a kid buying new sneakers that i read back in middle school that stuck with me ever since. it's downright lyrical. https://the24hourtala.files.wordpress.c ... unning.pdf

Agreed. It was clear he wasn't interested in adhering to much of any of the original material.

Here's my controversial opinions about this shit.

Dune sucks ass and you're all nerds.
Star Wars and Star Trek are both dumb
Lynch is the most overrated director in fucking history. His shit is dumb for the most part. Yes, I like the weird shit too. I liked Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway...yada yada yada. No one ever talks about how none of it makes any motherfucking sense. He's too artistic. It's like if Picasso made a movie. Come at me!
