I figured I'd let the excitement over the donuts die down a bit first. Here it is:
I debated about where to post this and decided the 3rd biggest thread....one inhabited by thick string using isolationist was the right place.
I started out years ago playing bass and then switched to guitar. I never really quit playing bass but it wasn't my main strang thang.
I've been playing more lately, now that my band is on a break and today as I was plodding along, I got an idea.
I decided to tune the two lowest strings down a step to D and G and then I tuned the two higher strings down two steps to "B" and "E".
So now it's DGBE and I really like it tuned that way. It's the same tuning as the 4 highest strings of a 6 string tuned in "E" and it sounds
rad and makes a lot of sense to me that way.
Have any of you doods tried this tuning? Is it pretty common? Are there any reasons that it sucks?
Once I get my answers, I'll leave you guys to your robot tentacle cat porn.

Not sure if this'll be any help to you, but while traditional tenor guitar tuning is CGDA, one of the most common alternate tunings is DGBE.

I've never tried DGBE, but I have tuned my bass to viola/cello tuning (CGDA) a few times. Tuning in fifths can be a bit weird if you're not used to it, but I dig it.

I've been considering tuning a bass to CGDA for quite some time, but have never got around to doing it.

I think you should do it. There've been a few classical and jazz double bassists that tune in fifths.
For a while I was tuning the four middle strings of my guitar to a uke tuning: ADF#B
So, then I just tuned the two outermost strings to D.
DADF#BD
I was able to play uke chords on the inner four strings and then use the outer strings for power chords and stuff.
I think it's interesting messing with tunings of other instruments.

I...stole the idea from El Ten Eleven and have my bass at EADA. I...like it a lot

Well, I think all of you should try DGBE and report your findings.

Just tuned a guy to cgda, and it is something.
I'll have to spend some time with it.

lol. i'm not good enough to get with different tunings i think. i have a hard enough time doing what i want to do on the simple main tuning.

The fun is moving your fingers in the same way but getting different sounds out of it.
PS Those donuts look horrendous.

I LOVE YOU BUT I'M GONNA HAVE TO CUT YOU.
hurm. i guess that makes sense. i've tuned to random open notes, found something i dug, figured it out on regular tuning.... that's been fun.
