Dude, whatever. People always think that their stuff is worth more than it actually is (or they know it isn't, but they still want mo' money for it).
Don't be afraid to make an offer. Especially if you feel that you're making a fair offer.
I think "lowballing" is subjective.

The worst they can say no. Honestly I usually price a little high on craigslist because I expect people try to talk me down. And if they don't, even better. You never what deal you can get until you ask.

Low ball them bitches. People do that shit to me all the time! I list higher sometimes just because of that. hah
"I do not have the ability to think rationally 90% of the time and I also change my mind at the drop of a hat".
If someone offers far less than half my asking price, then I say fuck them. I put an amp up for sale once for $1,500 and someone offered $500. Fuck him. Otherwise whatever. I'm willing to negotiate with people who are willing to negotiate.
And sometimes I really have to LOL at what people think used shit is worth. Yes, I understand that you gave it to some "famous" guy for 10 seconds at NAMM 8 years ago. That's an amusing anecdote, not a priceless heirloom.
Lowballing - if I make an offer below the asking price, I usually (truthfully) explain that I'm not deliberately trying to lowball, but that my offer is legitimately the best I can do. I've been turned down before, but usually with the seller saying that they understand my position (a crap-tastic economy does help my argument out a bit...unfortunately).

I started to sell a few basses but changed my mind, so for no reason whatsoever here is a jumbo/LARGE picture of my Stingray. I blasphemed it by making it passive Vol/Tone with two dummy pots that do nothing. Blasphemy rules, especially when the diehards get all butthurt about it. "WTF PASSIVE MUSIC MAN YOU SIR ARE THE DEVIL." Well nobody actually told me that (yet), but I have seen such behavioUr in the past. Fuckin' shit sounds tits so what the fuck I say, what the fuck indeed.
Damn, just when I was about to offer you 44,4% of your asking price for the Dingwall!
The only blasphemous thing about that is not building in an oscillator and using the spare pots to control it. That said, the clear pickguard makes up for everything.

Saw a band yesterday and the bassist was playing a Fender Stu Hamm. He'd ripped out the controls and the J pickup. So, it looked like he was going P pickup straight to output. He sounded great.

Fuck yes. I'm not man enough for straight-to-the-jack but I always appreciate seeing it.
Rickenbacker and EBMM dudes seem to freak out the most when it comes to the Mod Squad. I say MY BASS, MY RULES.
Although whenever anyone wants to put frets on a fretless I call shenanigans. So we all have our limits.

My stingray already had a John East pre in it when I got it, so I couldn't even tell you what mine "should" sound like. I like it the way it is though. Ballsy as fuck.
