About the hair:
The business school has a 90 something percent job placement rate! Freaking amazing. Fortune 500 companies have recruiters at our school everyday, they are having meet and greets, etc. If I play the game right, who knows...I am not looking to work on Wall Street but there are plenty of solid oppurtunities. I am not going to get less of a shot at a great job because my hair is long, sad but true. I also just think I needed a change. 2 1/2 years ago I cut my hair off when I started going to the little college that I went to for 2 years. I needed to feel like a different person. After I got a routine and knew people I decided to grow my hair back out. Sometimes I think an outward change does help an inward change, at least psychologically.
JWAR: I definately struggled for a few years when I was just playing at home. Then I got in a band again and was on fire. The band broke up. I didn't play at all for a bit. Then I got a Korg Electribe. I just made dance, and hip hop stuff. Then I got Maschine. I got into that for awhile. After a bit I got out the crappy bass and combo amp that I still had left (sold most of my stuff already) and I started making Beats to practice to. Some real standard, some challenging, I also made chord progressions on Maschine some simple, some more interesting. I got my passion for bass back, got in a band and here we are a few years later.
I get what you say about instruction. It helps. I haven't had formal lessons in a long time but it could help get you out of the rut. I can still read music, but I would have to translate (basically write it out) as my sight reading skills have gone down the tubes. So either get a real instructor, and take some of what they say with a grain of salt, but learn some theory. Dude, you are a good bass player, you probably naturally know some theory like playing in different modes for different vibes to a riff but don't know what to call it. I have recently bought some books to give myself a refresher and to tighten up. They have tab as well as notation so you could cover the tab up and try to teach yourself how to read music. There are some decent instructional videos on the internet. I would think, getting lessons in real life for a bit, then you could move on to self study for awhile unless you hit the jackpot with just an AMAZING teacher.
AND the CraigsList idea is a good one too. Seriously, you are a great riffer so make some noise homie!

yah. i played from about 15 to 21 years old, put the bass away, didn't play until i was 30 i think. did sequenced electro stuff for fun during that time. made it all fresh and new when i did pick up a bass (that's when i tried a 6'er on a lark and loved it), but i don't think you necessarily need a BREAK, just a change. does sound like you're getting board 'cause you're not ending up with any product.
that was the biggest difference for me about jamming on bass or twiddling around on the computer. i could play for 3 or 4 hours, come up with a bunch of cool stuff, have fun. then put the bass down. after spending an hour or 2 on a computer i'd end up with at least a sketch of a song. that i could listen to in the car or on headphones or something... but maybe even less interesting music, that had permanence. so Deltz idea of doing recordings might spark your interest in a more stable setup.
plus, fuck yeah look for a band. you gooooood. i buy WAY less when i'm writing or have shows coming up. gets more about what to do with pedals instead of HAVE ALL THE PEDALS.

Re: Will JWR flip it all? Find out on pg 720! (TB Mega Thre
I reckoned myself a tuba player. Mighty fine tuba player. Had a full paid scholorship on it. I played bass. Double bass. Was in orchestra, an art rock band, black metal band, punk band.....all that jazz...well...not jazz....because jazz sucks a deads dogs asshole. Anyways, halfway through I changed from performance to music education when I realized NO ONE got jobs with music performance (and I got girl). A year after that. I was burnt out on music. Probably didn't touch my bass for four years. During that time, I realized psychology was my thing but an advisor told me it would be quicker to just finish up my MuEd bachelors and get a masters in psych. So I did. And then I got married. I was a middle school band director for one year and a high school band director for two years (to pay my way through grad school).
Pretty much as soon as I finished my masters and quit the band directing, my love for music came back. Got on TB, ILF, played in Losers' Reunion, and now Jet Jaguar.
And here I am.

Fuck you. Really, fuck you, that almost killed me. The quints staring forwards with a blank, determined expression, their ghostly voices chanting.

It would be great if they were identical and all the same gender. Disappearing and reappearing in different parts of the room and pretending the walls were mirrors.
I just know I'm going to have a weird-ass dream now.

you walk into a room, the floor looks a little high. as soon as you mumble, "that's weird." to yourself the uniform brown carpet jumps up in 10 or 12 places as Quints x Quints worth of Sousie Progeny lift their heads and destroys the flat illusion given by all of their matching clothing. sporadically 5 or more heads pop up out of the non-floor and track towards you. weirdly a-tonal yet sonically fitting hummed versions of Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuhar NUR Duh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuhar NUR come in from different points of the room, low rumbling as a bassline, somehow distorted. by this time ALL heads are staring, unblinking, from nigh-identical feature laden faces with identic creepy shaggy pale blonde bowl-cuts. by the time an unholy harmonic spattering of Stannnnnnding... TALL comes in the fear has over taken you and you shuffle back slowly, never taking your eyes off of them, to find out that the door has disappeared from behind you. now there is no exit.... the room has somehow become longer and wider.... you can't see an end in sight... and somehow they are ALL AROUND YOU NOW.
madness ensues.

That reads like a David Lynch screenplay. I love it.
