Interesting psychology side note. When someone comes up to congratulate you and you give the usual humble reply of "ah, it was just a'ight" or "eh, I messed up a lot" or something along those lines, the person who first congratulate you is most likely to have one of two responses; 1) They'll start getting it actually WAS just a'ight and their memory of your show will diminish in quality. A good bit of our memories are false (or most, depending on who telling you their theory) and actually colored by current variables. An example would be a 29 year old might look back at an old childhood sleep over positively....but if, after the course of a year, the now 30 year old has a falling out with that with person they sleptover with, a lot of times you'll find their whole perception of the sleepover is completely different. They might even view it as negative....and 2) They'll take your comment as almost an insult. As if you're saying "well you're not able to discern good playing from bad playing".
True story.
Best just to say "thanks".

I remember seeing a video of a band playing a punk version of a pop song or something. When the song finished, the crowd cheered quite heartily, obviously approving. Then the singer went and muttered into the mic "That was a terrible idea". *Crowd shuffles uncomfortably*

Ha. If I were such a manipulative basstard, I'd hve you send me two pedals and let me keep them for over three months.....
Heheh. I'll be mailing those back this week, btw. I've gotten to do everything I want with them and now they just sit there as I'm either not there or playin with the laptop. Love you for letting me jam on them so long.

Musicians are their own worst critics. Oftentimes the audience can't even tell if you've messed up or not (unless it's painfully obvious).

Either their worst critics, or they consider themselves to do no wrong. I've seen a lot more arrogance than modesty in many musicians.

Congrats on the show, Benhdster!
Yeah, talking to people afterwards is always awkward, except for my close buds. I like talking to them because they're honest enough with me to tell me when i DO suck. So when they say that I was good, I know they're not bullshitting and it actually was a good set.

Congrats on the show Behndy - you're too rad to be a fulltime bedroom warrior. I've got a bunch of standard responses which are pretty trite, but they work well
The gushing dude: "yeah, thanks man, it's awesome that you came out to see the show, we're really happy to have your support"
The WTF are those pedals dude: "yeah, you can get a lot of sounds out of em, it's good fun".
The interested in pedz for realz dude: "yeah, I've been collecting for ages, it's nice to have the variety... bla blah... sometimes you can find inspiration for a song in a new pedal/sound"
The "ok this conversation is over": Alright thanks man - I've gotta pack this shit up, I'll catch you later at the merch booth.
Don't underrate making twee post-concert conversations something of a routine. The punters don't know you say the same stuff to everyone, and if you're kinda smooth with your lines I think they just feel like "wow, I had a great conversation with that guy, what a cool band" = win for everyone.
