Re: Favourite tuning?
Has anyone ever messed around with Nashville tuning? I've been getting very curious due to random YouTube videos popping up in my feed. This sounds really nice:

I may have also just ordered a partial capo because of this guy
Also, I've been playing a ton of acoustic guitar in open D. I used to try way to hard to emulate blues licks when I tuned to open D (and I was never very good at it), but watching some of the Tallest Man on Earth's livestreams recently has had me exploring more chords and fingerpicking and I have been loving it.

Re: Favourite tuning?
I've tried the same idea as Nashville tuning on a few recordings by putting a capo on the 12th fret and doubling guitar parts/playing high open chords, but obviously this isn't the same as actually having a guitar strung properly for the tuning. So in short yeah I'd also really like to try it

Re: Favourite tuning?
So I ended up restringing the Gretsch Gin Rickey I just bought for Nashville tuning. I didn't realize that it was only the top 4 strings that were an octave up; the b and e are both tuned normally. This makes playing scales weird because the transition from the g to b string doesn't sound right at all. That being said, chords and fingerpicking sound really cool and it sounds even better with some reverb and delay. I'm going to keep it strung that way for awhile to see what I come up with.coldbrightsunlight wrote:I've tried the same idea as Nashville tuning on a few recordings by putting a capo on the 12th fret and doubling guitar parts/playing high open chords, but obviously this isn't the same as actually having a guitar strung properly for the tuning. Re: Favourite tuning?
Yeah tuning the e and b up an octave is just not possible on a guitar I don't think? The gauge of strings you'd need to make the tension manageable would be hair thin and not usable as strings.
Glad you're enjoying it! I don't think many people use it for playing a lot of single notes as far as I know. But chords sound beautiful

Re: Favourite tuning?
Yeah I probably could have figured that out myself had I actually done any thinking about the string tensions, but I just grabbed a set of the D'Addario Nashville strings, slapped them on, then got confused when I got to the b stringcoldbrightsunlight wrote:Yeah tuning the e and b up an octave is just not possible on a guitar I don't think? I like the sound of McGuinn's HD-7 which has a double G-string where the extra string is G₄. Sounds like a 12-string. Should work well for twee sounds and that.

Sounds fun. Unison strings are amazing, I like using a tuning that has a pair somewhere even on a 6 string.VREEEEVROOOOOW wrote:I like the sound of McGuinn's HD-7 which has a double G-string where the extra string is G₄. Sounds like a 12-string. Should work well for twee sounds and that.

Re: Favourite tuning?
It this the appropriate place to ask about string gauge?
Well it is now.
Lately i've been playing old smil-LP a lot more than I did in the past couple of years, so yesterday I decided to put it back in shape: took off the old strings - which were actually VERY OLD - cleaned frets and contacts, and so on, the usual stuff..
I've been using it in standard tuning since 7 or 8 years, but the guitar and the pickups were built to work well with lower tunings so I want to set it back to CFA#D#GC.
Now, believe it or not, I don't remember at all what set of strings I was using when I was downtuned like that about 10years ago (bought it in 2010 iirc).
The neck is 25,5" and I think it was tuned in E with 10-48s - i'm not sure, again, i haven't been using it in a while - so i'm thinking about trying a set of 13-62s to go 2steps down, but i'm here to ask for suggestions so..

Re: Favourite tuning?
I use 11s or 12s on electric. Works fine in CGCGBC at least, which is the C-tuning I've been using the most.

Re: Favourite tuning?
With an open tuning like that, 11s might work, but with a standard 2-steps down I think string tension would be too loose with 11s, specially in the 2nd,3rd and 4th strings.
Maybe I can try with 12s but it might not be enough considering that now I use 10.5s or 11s when tuned in E.

Re: Favourite tuning?
13-62 should feel like 11s or even 12s in standard probably?? I use a 12-60 set for CGCFGD on an LP (gibson scale) and that's good for me. So with your slightly lower tuning this is probably good except the 62 might feel pretty beefy
This is useful https://tension.stringjoy.com/ if you find a gauge on another guitar you have that you know feels good you can figure out which gauge will get you the tension you like for this guitar/tuning.
