That happened in Florida too, where I was at the time. We had some DIY websites to help people find spaces and all the sites shut down preemptively to protect the spaces from that shit.

I know I’m not really a fixture of this community, and of course everyone is entitled to their opinions and means of grieving, but I’d like to point out that Feral hated laws, cops, courts, property, the state, and capitalism. That is to say, I doubt very much that, even in this situation, she would be calling on the powers of police and courts for their notions of “justice.” I feel Almena was a pretty clear scumbag, but I think Feral would be more inclined to blame gentrification and the lack of respect in our society for outsiders like her and so many others. The ghost shop fire was a terrible tragedy, and I will not say anything to lessen Derek Almena’s responsibility here, but he was only a symptom of a larger problem. When I went to the bay for the funeral and a year later for the memorial, I saw a city wracked with an absurd housing crisis, largely the fault of the tech companies. The neighborhood where Feral’s house was seemed to have an occupied RV or van or camper trailer in every third driveway, because apparently almost no one who doesn’t work in the tech sector can afford rent.

As an alternative, I think we can better honor her memory by working to defend and improve radical and artistic spaces with our own efforts. Feral’s joy and happiness came from autonomy and collective power, not the state’s repressive agenda and the greed and negligence that led to her death.

Well said. Almena is very much the visible tip of an iceberg of reasons that led to the tragedy, and even if prosecuting him makes people feel better (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) it doesn't fix the underlying social and political problems that create, ignore and put at risk marginalised communities.

Briggs noted how fire investigator Maria Sabatini could not rule out the possibility that the fire was caused by arson, and he said witnesses will testify that they heard popping sounds, glass breaking and a scuffle near the origin of the fire.

“The evidence will show you that this was an arson,” Briggs said. “This fire was intentionally set.”

At the #GhostShipTrial today so far the defense called key witness Sharon Evans, who testified she saw 14-19 "Spaniards" in dark hoodies at a taco truck shortly after the fire started, several of whom were boasting that no one was going to make it out of the warehouse alive.
